I just got home about an hour ago and as I started walking down the alley to get into my apartment building, Actor, Comedian, and Musician Jeff Daniels was there, standing next to his tour bus and chatting with some of the Circa '21(the dinner/playhouse right across the alley from my apartment) staff.
Daniels is in town tonight making a stop for his music/comedy-performance tour and as I got out of my car to carry my groceries inside, there he was!
The first thing that blurted out of my mouth was: "Fuck Yeah!" And then I started walking down the alley towards him.
As soon as he heard and saw me, he had this look on his face that led me to believe that he didn't want to talk to me.
But I always walk down the alley to get inside the crib and I wasn't about to walk way the hell out of my way to accommodate Mr. Daniels, so I kept on walking.
As soon as I was in front of him, I nodded, shook his hand and told him I was a big fan.
I told him that "Dumb and Dumber" is one of my all time favorite movies and he said something like "Oh, thanks"(which I'm sure he was less than thrilled to hear).
Then I told him: " 'The Squid and The Whale' was good, too." And he something about me having a nice range of taste.
The Circa '21 folks were kind of laughing a bit and I just pointed at Daniels, gave him the thumbs up and started walking towards the back entrance. Daniels told me good luck with my cat litter-which I was carrying with my groceries.
My initial reaction was to wonder if the guy was a prick or just goofing around, too.
Hard to say. I thought about asking if I could get a photo with him on my cell phone, but based on his reaction when he first saw me walking his way, I decided to not even bother. Besides, my hands were full. But maybe I should have.
Ever since my "Henry Rollins Interview" disaster for my old radio show ("MidNight MadNess"-R.I.P.), I've been less than enthusiastic about meeting celebrities and rock stars, for fear that they might all be dicks.
This very recent experience has probably reenforced my lack of enthusiasm for movie folk, but it was still kind of cool.
I'd known for months that Daniels was coming to town and I was hoping I'd get a chance to run into him.
And I had already decided that if I was, in fact, going to meet him, I was going to say what I said about the "Dumb and Dumber" and "The Squid and The Whale"....And I did!
If I could do it all over again, I would've said something like: "Yeah, I used to jerk off in the school library when I was a kid, too!"(A reference to "The Squid and The Whale").
Or I would've brought up that skit Daniels did with Chris Elliot when he hosted Saturday Night Live, where they're supposed to be showing various clips from his numerous films and instead they keep showing that scene from "Dumb and Dumber" where he's taking that crazy, laxative-fueled, emergency shit in Lauren Holly's bathroom.
Oh, well...
I've decided that now I must write, direct-and maybe produce-my own films before Daniels dies.
Mother fucker hasn't heard the last of me. - Brad Vidmar

Jeff Daniels' thoughts on what appeals to theatre audiences is absolutely spot on! I run Playwrights Project, a nonprofit in San Diego California, so you may be singing to the choir with me. We teach young people (future playwrights and captive students in English classes throughout San Diego schools) that if they write with honesty about what matters to them, they'll engage their audiences. Afterall, they're who we want in the theatre seats! And YES! audiences want to recognize themselves in the characters on stage. Thanks for encouraging more productions of new works by emerging writers. - Cecelia Kouma
