Ah, from the cool mountains of Vermont, I just cherish looking at this commentary. The part that just made me chuckle was the comment about how socialist countries can't maintain economic stability, but free-markets can. Can you say "AIG" "Fannie Mae" or "Freddie Mack"?
Additionally, it's communism when you make sure everybody has everything they need, like food, water, housing, but it's not anymore when you give billions of dollar to irresponsible agents of free market capitalism? Suggestion: 1) Read a book about the multiple philosophers of socialism. 2) Read up on this entity called regulation. 3) Check your 'other' sources, and you'll find that Chavez has given a rise to Venezuela's economy, and increased efficiency within PDVSA, especially in the light of coups from rich Venezuelans still stuck in a Cold War mentality.
From your local communist,

As an american who HAS done research from various sources about the Chavez administration, it's apparent that they are a far left leaning socialist society that is sliding into communism. Chavez has let the PDVSA (Venezuela's nationalized oil company) slide into disrepair by using the capital generated to fund his socialist policies, bribe the Chinese and other Latin american countries and has reduced the output of oil by a substantial margin. He has also recently embarked on a campaign of nationalization of various industries such as Milk, some Agriculture, Steel, Cement and certain aspects of the financial sector. Socialist governments have proven time and time again that due to corruption they are hugely inefficient at running any industry and free market capitalism with checks/balances and accountability is the only way to really generate the economic capital that equates with prosperity.

In the long run it doesn't do any good to provide social benefits if it bankrupts the country and right now Venezuela is barely holding it's head above water. - Brandon B

I'm glad this guy wrote this piece, because Harrington in a big tool who doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about(and to be honest, I tried reading that article of his 3 times and I still couldn't figure out what he was getting at-other than the fact that he doesn't seem to think to highly of Chavez and the Venezuelans). I don't get it, they've lied about Vietnam, Iraq, who put the bullet in John Kennedy's head, and so much more, yet we're supposed to take the mainstream media's version of the government/corporate sourced and sanctioned "truth" seriously? Go to this link and watch this short video clip:

I wonder if the U.S.'s hostile attitude towards Chavez has less to do with his supposedly communist ways and more to do with what Vincente Fox is talking about with Larry King.

Mark, you are the very type of person this piece was meant to set straight, and has obviously failed, not because the author is incapable, but because you are wilfully ignorant. This isn't communism or dictatorship by any stretch of the imagination. Everything Chavez does is ratified and approved--not only by the Venezuelan parliament, but BY THE PEOPLE. They've got more democracy down there than you have in your mother's basement, so put down the CIA Kool-Aid and wake up. Better still, go on down there and ask around--OUTSIDE the rich neighborhoods, that is. The rich down there are just as deluded as you.

And Steven, too late. The "free market way of life" is an oxymoron. Where the markets are "free", the people are enslaved--or DEAD. No, thank you, I'd sooner take Chavez's (very mild, very democratic) "communism" anyday! - Bina

I'm glad to see that well-off college students, in the freedom of the United States of America, still are enamored with communism and dictatorships. - Mark
