This article has a lot of truth in it, actually. There are tons of jobs that are going to become available in the next 10 years as the Baby Boomers retire. The first of these jobs are opening up right now as we speak. I know several companies right now that have to go to Michigan and Ohio to recruit because there is already a shortage of employees in this area due to retirements. Granted, this isn't true for all fields, but there are plenty of opportunities out there right now in many fields. You may have to go out and network to find them, but they are there. - Dan Foley

I read this article at a restaurant the other night. My significant other and I guffawed--loudly--at most of this piece, and I use that term loosely. I know of no less than a half-dozen (myself included) individuals in the Quad Cities who have BA's w/honors or have advanced degrees, some with management experience, hard workers all.
What else do we all have in common? Well, two of us work full-time for under $10/hr., two of us haven't been able to find a full-time job at all, and two of us work for tips.
Now, this RCReader article says a lot: Namely, you get what you pay for, yes? The reader is paying nothing to Ms. Day, other than the fact that she gets 3 more clips for her portfolio when she graduates and has to fight the urge to scream when she ends up, fat portfolio and all, waiting tables or spending 6-10 hours a day filling out applications, getting scammed by temp agencies skimming 20-40% of her pay, and reconfiguring her resume for the hundred-and-umpteenth time only to be offered "an exciting opportunity!" that will fail to provide her any upward mobility, financial security, or (in many cases) benefits.
Seriously, Reader, this article is a c-r-o-c-k CROCK. Wake up! The QC right now is black hole of employment opportunity...unless you're a nurse, engineer, salesman, CDL OTR driver, or willing to work for $10/hr. or less on a night shift, often in an industrial setting and in a leadership position (yeah, that means you, Jacobsen Scamming!).
Good grief...the only nugget of truth in this whole article?:
"Andrew Messerschmidt, an Augustana student, said, 'I really just don't want to live here because I've tried to get a job and internships here, and that just hasn't happened for me.'"
Rest assured, you couldn't be less alone, Andrew. - Wayhomer

I'm a Quad Citian with a Bachelors degree and connot find one decent job here. They all want to pay between 10 and 14 dollars per hour. This area is primarily industrial with low pay. Where are you getting your information? It's a load of crap. - tader
