What about Steventon's Restaurant in LeClaire, Iowa or Le Figaro's (French) in downtown Rock Island, Illinois? Their fine quality food/drink and service is excellent! - Jon Que Public

Went to Johnny's Italian Steakhouse tonight. WOW what a horrible meal. Goat cheese and blue cheese and apples and 7-Seas-like goopy so-called Italian dressing? Its like they mixed the wrong ingrediants from different salads together to serve. All fine (except the dressing) individually but sick all together. We asked for salmon with light butter sauce. I think there was at least a stick on the plate. Totally overwhelmed and ruined a perfectly good piece of fish. I asked how much butter sauce was usually on it. That was after I asked for water like three times. I'll never go again. The best place in the area that I've found so far-the Cellar in Geneseo. btw, we live in chicago and Johnny's wouldn't stay open for 2 minutes there. Oh yeah-2 pinots on the menu by the glass. I has to ask for the George DuBoef on the second glass. The first glass was blackstone. For the same price? wtf? - boofy

Continuity and Quality in the Quad Cities

I grew up in the Quad Cities and left back in the late 70's. It's incredible to see that Whitey's and Harris Pizza are still leaders in their categories. They were the best back then and, apparently, they're still the best today. The continuity and quality are astounding and highly commendable. I'm looking forward to visiting both places when I'm in RI in summer 2011. Keep up the good work! - Darius

I used to live in the Quad Cities 20 years ago and come back often to visit friends and family. I now live in Des Moines. It appears it has grown better in restaurants over the years. I prefer eating at local ones that you cannot find elswhere; Whitey's (#1), Pizza & Sub's Calzones (#2) for us. The same is true in DSM; Flying Mango for BBQ. The voting in DSM is the same. You get choices like Olive Garden, BWW because one - they advertise in the local magazines and get more votes. Also, many people don't venture out much. I usually eat Indian, Thai, Vietnamese every month. My co-workers usually will not go unless it is HyVee Chinese for the extent of their international flavors. So, the voting is biased that way. Just find your own and recommend them to others. - Marshall L

Los Agaves? I guess other people have had better experiences there than I have. 0-3 in my count. I would take LaFlama over Los Agaves any day. And Adolphs over them too. - Jake C

JW - the authors don't compile this list. It is compiled through people voting. Greg - the voting ballot is not a drop down list. It is a fill-in survey. So that means people are actually typing in "Red Lobster" or "McDonald's". Solution: encourage your circle of people to try out non-chain restaurants and get them to vote! :) - Cindy Lou Hoo

this list is absolutely terrible...
i'm not going to join the debate of any local cuisine, however some of the listings on here are ridiculous and a shame to list as the best in the quad cities.

Olive Garden as the second best italian restaurant? overpriced, poorly made, corporate mandated, italian-knock off food cannot compete with MANY local diners.

While i recognize good seafood is hard to find in the midwest, I also find it disgraceful to place Red Lobster as the best seafood in the entire quad cities. (half the article dedicated to it simply praised its advertising campaign. give me a multimillion dollar budget and i'll make roadkill look delicious)

and my biggest issue with the "best" food in the quad cities is it's desert section. how on earth is Village Inn better than WHITEYS, or even Lagomarcino's? Both are quad city icons, that are highly recognized and idolized in the qc community. they reflect and represent the quad cities much better than a national chain with stale deserts and faded paint.

I could dispute the validity of several other rankings on this page, however the simply fact is that many of these selections do NOT accurately portrait the best cuisine in the quad cities, or accurately represent the outstanding qc culture. i suggest the authors spend much more time exploring local restaurants. - jw

I was thinking of "Hungry Boy" when I was talking about "Uncle Pete's"
Uncle Pete's is harder to get to than "Dr Gryos" but it was good. People probably like the excessive amount of meat that "Dr Gyros" gives you - Greg

Regarding the comments of others:
alabastor, please tell us of some alternatives to try other than chains, my opinion is that they cannot be found by many people. Where have you reviewed online or mentioned these elusive restaurants you refer to but don't mention here? You mention 5 chains, and no non-chains in your review.

I don't see many non-chain restaurants in the dining guide. And its sad that so much of this list is chains.

Mari Diamond, My guess is that its because Dr Gyros is open all the time, where I have yet to see Uncle Pete's open. I generally don't make it down that way for lunch ever, which seems to be the only time they are open?

These reviews are negative to the quality of the list, i would say its simply because of how the questions were collected. Many of the people going through the questionnaire probably just selected something they recognized, instead they should ask you to rate each restaurant, so that its not the restaurant that got 20 people to select it from a list, but the one that had 5 very satisfied people over one that had 20 people moderately satisfied - Greg

La Rancherita has the best chips and salsa in the area, and arguably the best authentic Mexican food. I am disappointed to see that they weren't even mentioned. - Greg

Best wings at least on the Iowa side of the river are located at the Jersey Bar & Grill and the new sports bar that took the place of Plucker's/Funky Moes. - abasenji

People really think Azteca is better than Los Agaves? WTF? How many times has that place been shut down by the health dept? I mean, something as nasty as employees not washing their hands after going number 2 is totally disgusting and reason enough to never go there. Not to mention, Los Agaves has the best chips and salsa on the planet. These reviews are a joke. - Big Chunk

Ridiculous

This list is absolutly ridiculous. There are plenty of establishments in town other than food chains. McDonalds is seriously the second best kid friendly menu?? KFC is the best chicken in town!?!? HyVee beats Breugger's for bagels and Applebee's is the best chain in town? The reason original and innovative restaurants are run out of business is because reviews like these refuse to branch out and try new things. - alabastor
