Epic Records issues the first of its Vinyl Exams - a new classic-hip-hop series hosted by DJ Bobbito in the mix-show format. Interviews with pioneers like Afrika Bambaataa and the Fat Boy's Prince Markie Dee are blended into the set alongside music from Schooly D, the Treacherous 3, Run-D.M.C., the Fearless 4, Roxanne Shante, Biz Markie, and more. The enhanced portion of the CD includes multimedia elements of hip-hop culture with Grand Wizard Theodore and the Rock Steady Crew's Crazy Legs. ... And on a funkier note, Hip-O Records salutes 30 years of undeniable groove with its 55-track, four-CD Funk Box this week. All the greats are represented - James Brown, Rick James, Kool & the Gang, Curtis Mayfield, Parliament/Funkadelic, the Brothers Johnson, War, the Gap Band, Cameo, Commodores, Average White Band, and more. A 48-page booklet chronicles the story of funk with the hair, the styles, and historical anecdotes.
