February 8th - 3rd Annual Quad Cities FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) regional qualifier will be held at Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa.  24 Teams from Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin are scheduled to participate. Winning teams will be invited to participate at the State of Iowa FTC Championship being held on February 21st and 22nd in Coralville/Iowa City. This event is free and open to the public.  People of all ages will enjoy this face-paced and exciting event which will showcase 7th-12th grade students’ ability to design, build and program robots, use teamwork to build alliances and cooperate with other teams, apply creative problem solving to real-world math and science concepts and earn a place in the Iowa State FTC Championship.Opening ceremonies will begin at 11:15 A.M., qualification matches will begin at 11:45 A.M. with semi-final and final matches beginning at approximately 4:30 P.M. FTC is designed for students in grades 7-12 to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.

 

February 10th – LeClaire Community Library - Crazy Colors! Winter got you feeling blue? How about purple, yellow, and green? Join us on Feb. 10th from 4-5pm for some stories, followed by hands-on, colorful experiments and crafts. This program is recommended for ages 3-6, and don’t forget to wear old clothes to this event—we expect to get a little messy!

February 12th – Edward Jones - Savvy Women, Smart Investors 11 a.m. at Faithful Pilot. Hosted by Amy Barnes of Edward Jones. Guest Speaker will be Ross Haeberle, Regional Manager with MFS Fund Distributors. Program will provide strategies and financial planning information pertinent to women.  Edward Jones will provide Lunch for all attendees, however, reservations must be made by February 4th and space is limited. February 13th – LeClaire Community Library - STEM Club Love science, technology, engineering, and math? If so, join us from 4-5pm on Thursday, Feb. 13th for fun experiments with friends. This program meets the second Thursday of every month, and is recommended for grades 3rd-5th.

 

February 14th – LeClaire Community Library - Open Board Gaming School’s out on Feb. 14th, so head over to the library to play all your favorite board games. This all-ages program is from 1-3pm.

February 20th – LeClaire Community Library - Elephant and Piggy Party! Celebrate Mo Willems lovable characters with themed crafts and activities from 4-5pm. This program is best for grades Pre-K to 2nd.

February 23rd - Buffalo Bill’s Birthday Party! The Buffalo Bill Museum in LeClaire invites the public to celebrate William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody's birthday from noon – 4 p.m. Born in LeClaire, IA on February 26th, 1846, he was a frontiersman, US Army Scout, and later a celebrity touring throughout the world with his “Wild West Congress.” He remains a favorite among generations, world-wide. Free admission, light refreshments, children's activities, and a visit from “Buffalo Bill” himself! No RSVP required!

February 28th – LeClaire Community Library - LEGO Club See what building challenge is in store for you on Friday, Feb. 28th from 3:30-4:30pm. This program meets the last Friday of every month and is recommended for ages 7 & up.

 

Save the Date

March 1st – Rock and Roll Bingo!  LeClaire Rec Center – Fund raiser for Freedom Rock. Songs will be played and you identify the songs on bingo cards. There will be 50/50 and other raffles.  Event will be hosted by Cody Tucker of B100!  More details to come!

 

March 7th - Buffalo BIll Museum Grand Opening & Ribbon-Cutting 5 p.m. Come celebrate the museum's expanded facility during an Open House (4-7pm) and the LeClaire Chamber of Commerce's Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at 5pm.  It will be a great start of "First Friday" in LeClaire!

Service Hours: Looking for new opportunities to complete your service hour requirements? The library could always use some help! Students are invited to stop by the library as their schedule allows—no advance appointment is required—and we will put them to work!  We try and be as flexible as possible—student volunteers can stay as long or as little as they are able to or comfortable with.

TAG: In March, the library will be starting up our very first Teen Advisory Group (TAG)! Join us for our first meeting on March 20th, from 4-5pm to learn how YOU can help the library staff develop services for young adults. By attending you can earn credit towards your services hours, and we serve snacks!

Events for Adults:

LeClaire Writer’s Group: every 2nd Saturday of each month from 10am-12pm. Join us in the fireplace room for peer review, to discuss writing, and meet other local authors!

Adult Book Discussion Group: For the month of February, we’ll be reading The Rosie Project by Graeme Simison. We’ll meet on Wednesday, Feb. 26th at 6:30 in the fireplace room to discuss.
