Local Royal Neighbors of America chapters and the Semper Fidelis Club were to host the August 26 to shine a spotlight on domestic violence awareness and prevention. The festival was to feature live music, games, Zumba classes, product and food vendors, hip hop and belly dance instruction, martial arts demonstrations, clowns, a magician, free face painting, a bounce house, resource information and a silent auction to support area domestic violence shelters.

Paula Frazier-Millsap, Director of the Quad City Phoenix Festival will announce a new date and time later this week. According to Ms. Frazier-Millsap, “A little rain won’t dampen our spirits or our resolve. Like the mythical Phoenix, we will rise from this minor setback and present an even grander festival.”

Sponsored by Royal Neighbors of America, Semper Fidelis Club, Alcoa, Quad City Times, dci Print, Dispatch/Argus, River Drive Records and A.D. Huesing.

What: Quad City Phoenix Festival to raise awareness of domestic violence

Early Registration for Costumed Walk and Fun Run Ends September 1st

Moline – Come as your favorite character to the Make-A-Wish Illinois Walk & Run for Wishes on Saturday, September 15 at Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline and you can make wishes come true for local children with life-threatening medical conditions. Individuals and teams can participate and raise funds while enjoying the whimsical nature of the event. General Registration is $25 for adults, $15 for children ages 12 and under, and $95 per family. Following September 1st, an additional $5 will be added to each registration fee. Early registration also guarantees that participants will receive a custom event t-shirt.

Stepping off from Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline at 9:30 a.m, the event includes a 5K fun run and a leisurely 1 mile walk around the riverfront area. Refreshments, music and other entertainment will round out the celebration, with prizes awarded for top fundraisers as well as best youth and adult costumes. Additional details and registration are available online at www.walkrunwish.org. There is also an opportunity for “Virtual Walkers” who are participants who do not plan to attend the walk event, but want to fundraise to help make wishes come true. Virtual Walkers who raise over $100 for Make-A-Wish will receive a free Make-A-Wish t-shirt! Presented by Trinity Iowa Health System, all funds raised at Walk & Run for Wishes will benefit Make-A-Wish Illinois.

“We’re excited to present this community event that is not only fun for people of all ages and abilities, but one that really makes a difference for the courageous kids we work with every day,” said Janet Bantz Glavin, Community Relations Manager for Make-A-Wish Illinois.

This year, Make-A-Wish Illinois will grant wishes to more than 700 kids in Illinois who are living with life-threatening medical conditions such as cancer, renal disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Wishes can be a turning point in a child’s battle against illness and help children feel stronger, more energetic and more willing and able to comply with treatment protocols. Additionally, wishes empower children to take control over an aspect of their lives while helping them feel less isolated and more self-confident.

About Make-A-Wish

Make-A-Wish Illinois grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich their lives with hope, strength and joy. Since being founded locally in 1985, the chapter has granted more than 10,000 wishes and continues its mission to share the power of a wish® with special children across the state.  For information, call 312.602.WISH (9474) or (309) 637-1659.

Weekly Events Header

Hello!
RRL Logo SMALL

We'd like to say THANK YOU to everyone who made River Roots Live a tremendous success over the weekend!  Thanks to all of our volunteers and sponsors in addition to everyone who came out and supported the festival. RRL isn't possible without each and every one of you!

We'd also like to take a moment to congratulate Bones BBQ, a Davenport based BBQ vendor, that won the people's choice award at the festival.  Bones BBQ is the first local BBQ vendor to ever win this award.  Stop into his place at 4707 Brady Street for a bite to eat and say congratulations!

The Nadas are one of Iowa's signature bands with over 125,000 albums sold and the group will hit the Redstone Room tonight!  Other RME shows this week include Friday Live at 5, As A Heart Attack, Franti Project, and The Devil Whale.   Jim The Mule and The Dawn's joint CD Release Show will rock RME on Friday night; get there early to catch openers Busted Chandeliers and Kerry Tucker Band.

The River Bandits are in action tonight and tomorrow before returning to Modern Woodmen Park on Wednesday.  Friday night is City of Davenport night at the ballgame in addition to Fireworks after the game and a Bandit Wedding.  Tonight marks another Thirst-Day Thursday and next Wednesday's game includes a Presidential bobble-head giveaway!

Join the Davenport Public Library through the end of the month as they display St. John's Bible.  A master calligrapher, Paul Herrera, will put on a free demonstration and lecture Monday evening.  Herrera has been lecturing and instructing in lettering and calligraphy for over thirty years throughout the United States and Canada.

The NASA Art Exhibition continues at the Figge and enjoy a film titled "When We Left the Earth" on Saturday.

See you downtown!

Celebrating Twenty-Two Years of Helping Single Parent Families Move from Homelessness to Self-Sufficiency PDF Print E-mail
News Releases - Local Events
Written by Sister Mary Ann Vogel
Friday, 24 August 2012 11:44
Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. is celebrating 22 years of service to the Quad Cities with a New Orleans style Jazz Brunch at Crow Valley Golf Club on Sunday, September 23, 2012, from 11am to 2pm. Sarah Marie Young, a Chicago vocalist, will once again be the featured entertainer and she will be accompanied by a pianist and a string bass player. Sarah Marie was awarded first place in the international Montreux Jazz Voice Competition in Switzerland last year.

This year we are adding an auction featuring an opportunity for you and your friends to have lunch with either Sam Allen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Deere and Company, or Joan Lescinski, CSJ, PhD., President of St. Ambose University.

Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. (HMHI) has provided supportive housing for 711 single parents and their 1391 children during these past 22 years. These families were homeless at the time they entered the program. HMHI provides single parents with the tools and support to complete degrees, find jobs, and move into their own homes. Children learn there is a different way to live; some have become the first in their family to complete high school and go on to college. Over 400 applications from single parent families, including nearly 600 children, are received each year and yet HMHI has space and staff to provide services to only 47 of these families at any one time.

Please join us in our celebration and support this valuable community asset.
