Pressure Canner Guage Testing PDF Print E-mail

Pressure canners gauge testing will be on June 7, 2012 from 9:30 – 11:30 am at the Scott County Extension and Outreach office. Pressure canners with a dial-type pressure gauge should be tested each year for accuracy. To have a dial-gauge tested, bring the canner lid only – the entire canner is not needed.

It is not necessary to test weighted or rocker-type pressure regulators because they cannot be adjusted and will usually remain accurate. If you are unavailable at the scheduled time but would like a canner lid tested, you may bring the canner lid into the office ahead of June 7 and pick it up the next day.

Hello!
Downtown was packed for Mother's Day weekend and it was great to see so many people enjoying the Beaux Arts Fair and all of our shops and restaurants!  We also celebrated a ribbon cutting for the soon-to-be open Front Street Brewery expansion and Tap Room at the Freight House.  Read this QC-Times article to learn more about what's next for our riverfront landmark, and remember to visit the outdoor Freight House Farmers Market!

BalletIf you love a good fairy tale, don't miss Ballet Quad Cities presentation of The Sleeping Beauty at the Adler Theatre on Saturday.  Next door at the RiverCenter, Metro Mini Makers of the Quad Cities will be holding their 28th Annual Sale & Exhibit of Dollhouse Miniatures. Don't forget to pick up tickets while they last to see Wilco at the Adler in July,  too!

Guitar wizard and two-time Grammy-winner Laurence Juber will be playing live and hosting a workshop at River Music Experience!  QC Symphony fans will enjoy  Rhythm Unleashed: The Music of Marc Mellits, but don't miss sweet acoustic tunes by  Daphne Willis tonight!  We'd also like to thank Ashford University for helping to sponsor the Laurence Juber show.

Ashley Raines, Greg and Susan DirksOld Tire Swingers, and Key N Krates will also perform at RME this week.   Moonlight Bride, Ellis Kell, Lewis Knudsen, and Strategic will each play during RME's Live Lunch series.  Play your own music and get involved with Mandolin JunctionKidz Days, a Drum Clinic with Mike Mangini, and Account Music Club.

Be sure to check out the David Plowden's Iowa Exhibit and its opening reception tonight at the Figge Art Museum after the Thursdays at the Figge event.  Create with Kelli begins its monthly summer workshops this week and the final Young Artists at the Figge reception will feature the Pleasant Valley school district.  If you've never been to the Figge, consider singing up for a guided museum tour.

Wine Make your reservations this evening for a  Five Course Wine Dinner at the Bix Bistro, and swing by Rhythm City to enjoy a free performance by Jordan Danielsen Friday and Saturday.    Also on Friday, Low Down will be playing at Brady Street Pub.

Independent Scholars' Evenings:
“Social Networking Etiquette”
Is Social Networking Rudeness on the Rise?
By
Mark McLaughlin
Author
Public Relations Director at Results Marketing.
Mark McLaughlin will explore the transgressions of online etiquette  in his presentation. He will provide tips on how to avoid annoying or rude behavior. He will also provide suggestions on how to nurture positive Internet relationships.
McLaughlin believes that annoying or inconsiderate social networking behavior is, in part, a product of the fast times in which we live.
“Our culture is passing through a time of brisk technological development,” he says. “Modern life is changing at a frantic pace – and that’s okay. But as the world changes, sometimes people concentrate too much on their own objectives and manners fly out the window – and that’s not okay.”
Because Facebook and other social networks are free, people sometimes feel that “anything goes” -- but in reality, nothing could be further from the truth. “Abusing a free service is almost doubly inconsiderate,” he said. “People should be grateful for the service and treat its other users with respect.
Think about this social networking scenario: Suppose you are an author and some of your Facebook friends are also authors. But since they write books in the same genre as your works, they are also competitors. When those authors post ads for their books on your Facebook page without asking you, are they being rude?
About the presenter :
Throughout his career, Mark McLaughlin has specialized in getting messages out to business, industry and the general public. Over the years, his writings have appeared in literally thousands of magazines, trade journals, business publications, newspapers, anthologies, and websites.
When he is not at his desk at Results Marketing, writing advertising copy and news releases, he is at home working on his latest book. His 20-plus books include  the supernatural suspense novel MONSTER BEHIND THE WHEEL (co-written with Michael McCarty), the story collections MOTIVATIONAL SHRIEKER and PICKMAN'S MOTEL, and the poetry collections THE GOSSAMER EYE (co-written with Rain Graves and David Niall Wilson), PHANTASMAPEDIA, and PROFESSOR LaGUNGO'S EXOTIC ARTIFACTS & ASSORTED MYSTIC COLLECTIBLES.
