Join us as we recognize 30 years at the Davenport Public Library Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center (321 Main Street) on Saturday, October 20th from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a celebration that includes genealogy and history guest speakers, historical film footage, and more.

The Richardson-Sloane Special Collections Center opened in 1982 in a small area on the first floor of the Main Library. Donations and grants have allowed the Center to expand its collection and relocate to the roomier basement of the Main Library. Over the years, the support of our city and county personnel, volunteers, genealogical society members, library directors, staff, and generous donors have culminated in one of the finest genealogy and local history collections in the Midwest.

The schedule for the 30th Anniversary Celebration and Conference will be as follows:

9:45 a.m. –Welcome.

9:50 – 10:50 – Researching at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin by George Findlen.

10:50 – 11:20 Break.

11:20 – 12:30 – Draper Manuscripts – George Findlen.

12:30 – 1:30 – Lunch Break. You may either eat in local restaurants or bring a lunch to the library. Water and coffee will be provided for those who wish to eat at the library.

1:30 – 2:30 – Screening of local film footage from the SC Collection – SC staff will present with Bob King from Classic Films.

2:30 – 2:45 – Break.

2:45 – 3:45 – Civil War Camps – Jim Jacobsen of History Pays!

3:45 – 4:30 – Davenport 1857 Map: Conservation and Content by Amy Groskopf.

Participants are welcome to stay the whole day or attend the programs of interest. The Special Collections Center will be open for research as well. This event is free and registration is not required. For more information or questions please call (563) 326-7902.

More than 100 students will celebrate October 18th as National Lights ON Day--a day designed to draw attention to vital afterschool programs--by watching two kinds of dance—Rap and Philippine.

The school’s mini assembly is scheduled for Thursday, October 18th at 3:45 pm in the school’s north gym.  On hand will be the very popular local rap group, RusHour, (made up of former Glenview students) and The Philippine Dance Troupe Company of the Quad Cities.   The media is invited to attend the assembly and interview the performers, Lights ON student and staff.

Why:  Celebrate National Lights ON day in the community

East Moline will join more than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans celebrating Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide event organized by the Afterschool Alliance to rally support for afterschool programs.

Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. In the U.S. today, 15.1 million children go home alone after school.

Halloween Fun

This weekend - Haunted Island

Haunted Island will open at 6 p.m. October 12 and 13 at Credit Island, 2200 W. River Drive, Davenport. It will include a bat presentation at 6:30 p.m., hayrack rides from dark until midnight, and a bonfire with a storyteller. Concessions will be available. Admission is $12; $8 for ages 4-11; free for ages 3 and under.A $2-off coupon is available online. Proceeds benefit the Friends of Credit Island. Rain dates are Oct. 19 and 20.

This weekend - Family Friday Nights

Join us for Family Friday Night at Junior Theater. We're featuring "Jumanji" as this month's movie. 6pm - 9pm.
Fee: $2.50

Every Friday night is a different activity for the whole family.  
October 12 - Junior Theatre: Jumanji; 
October 19 - Sports:  Red Hawk Golf and movie; 
October 26 - Friday Night Jam and Uno tournament at Roosevelt Community Center.

Beauty and the Beast, by Vera Morris is the featured fall presentation in October: Cursed! A young prince is transformed into a Beast because of his selfishness and locked away in an enchanted castle, along with all who serve him.  To break the curse, he must learn to love more than just himself.  Beauty, a young girl from a nearby village, finds her way into the cursed castle.  Join us as the magic unfolds onstage.

@ 1:00 and 4:00 pm;

@ 2:00 pm.

Admission is $5 anyone 3 and up.
