WANTED CHILI TEAMS...Hand In Hand's Chili Cook-off PDF Print E-mail

Hand In Hand’s Annual Chili Cook-off is looking for chili teams who wish to complete for the title of Best Chili In The Quad Cities.  Both restaurants, area businesses and individuals with their own great chili will participate in this event every year.  If you think you make amazing chili, come and compete with the best in our community during this fun afternoon of chili tasting.  The Hand In Hand Chili Cook-off will take place on Saturday January 25, 2014 from 2:30 -7:00 PM at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds.
There are several chili judging categories including:  Judges Choice (celebrity judges) and People’s Choice (selected by ballot) for best individual and for best restaurant chili.  Last year over 12,000 chili samples were served by 21 teams to 1,350 participants.  Teams must bring 10 gallons of their fantastic chili. Prizes, plaques and bragging rights are all available. Get the Scoop on Hometown Teams

 Rock Island Public Library has been selected as one of only six locations in Illinois to host the newest Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Hometown Teams, and you can get involved. The library is seeking volunteers and partners to help implement the Hometown Teams exhibition, coming

to Rock Island in Sept. 2014.


To get involved, stop by the Rock Island Main Community Room on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

Part of the exhibit will involve telling the stories of hometown teams from Rock Island and surrounding Illinois communities through local exhibits and free public programs. The meeting is open to anyone with an interest in the project, or knowledge to share.

Artist Bryan Cotton sets up for his one-man show, running through Dec. 30 at the Rock Island Main Library. The 28-year-old Rock Islander specializes in ink and pen creations in architectural abstract illustrations, cityscapes, murals, cartoons, and still life perspectives. He primarily works in ink, but also creates in watercolors, marker, colored pencil and pastels. Stop by to see his work on the 2nd floor anytime during regular library hours.

Community Partnership Programs at Your Library
Get Enrolled for Health Insurance! Walk-in one-on-one help sessions are available on the 2nd floor of the Rock Island Main Library from the Rock Island County Health Department on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and again on Tues., Dec. 10. Every Thursday, you can get help from Genesis Health System, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, also at the Rock Island Main Library. 

The library is also working with Casa Guanajuato Quad Cities to confirm dates for offering Spanish-language information on the temporary visitors driver's license program (TVLD) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). More details coming next week! 

World AIDS Day Awareness Program. The library is partnering with the Project of the Quad Cities to host an HIV/AIDS Awareness Education & Testing program on Friday, Dec. 6, from 10:00 am to noon in the library Community Room. The test is a quick cheek swab. www.tpqc.org or 309-762-5433.

Rock Island Public Library, in partnership with RBdigital from Recorded Books, is pleased to announce the availability of Zinio for Libraries, the world's largest newsstand.

 

Through the library website, Rock Island Public Library cardholders will have free, unlimited multi-user access to complete digital magazines, easily viewed on most Internet-enabled devices.  62 of the most popular magazine titles are available, including Popular Science, Smithsonian, The Food Network, EatingWell, National Geographic, O, The Oprah Magazine, Rolling Stone and Women's Day. Patrons can browse from the library's collection of popular titles with no holds, no checkout periods, no waiting lists, and no limit to the number of magazine downloads.

 

This service was made possible to patrons of the Rock Island Public Library by funding from the Milan-Blackhawk Area Public Library District. Free Zinio Reader apps for a wide variety of devices are available for download at the Rock Island Library Zinio site.

Opening Event Kicks Off With Ribbon Cutting on December 6

(Kansas City, MO – DATE) – Beauty Brands, a one-stop beauty shopping concept, uniting salon brand haircare, prestige skincare and makeup, nail care, bath and body, as well as a full-service salon and spa under one roof, will open its first Davenport, Iowa store on December 6.

Located at the Elmore Marketplace, the new store will open with a ribbon cutting officiated by the Quad Cities Chamber of Commerce at 8:00 a.m. On its opening night between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., Beauty Brands will donate 25 percent of proceeds from its new location’s sales to Winnie’s Place, a shelter program that assists women, with or without children, who are homeless or victims of violence. Samples, special giveaways and exclusive, limited-time offers will be available to customers who attend the store opening, while supplies last.
