Congressman Loebsack, area residents, others to testify
WASHINGTON, D.C.—On Friday, January 27, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, will convene a field hearing of the Committee to discuss ways to rebuild the middle class. Congressman Dave Loebsack will join Harkin as part of the hearing.
“For decades, the middle class has been falling behind,” said Harkin. “Wages have not kept up with costs, and families’ savings accounts have dried up along with home values and good jobs. Iowans are justifiably worried about the future.
“It does not have to be this way. It is time to rise to these challenges and face them head-on, as a nation, by remembering what made our country great. Creating good jobs, investing in education, rebuilding our infrastructure, and preparing our workforce for the 21st Century will help to ensure that the middle class has a bright future ahead, in Iowa and around the country.”
Harkin has held a series of hearings in Washington over the past year examining the causes behind the decline of America’s middle class. Last year, Harkin staff members visited all 99 counties to gather insight into the challenges facing middle class families. This field hearing will focus on what is working in the Quad Cities to rebuild the backbone of America’s economy.

Observations on the communist atheist approach to social justice in Cuba will be the topic of a program presented by Margaret Thomas, Vince Thomas and Emma Carrillo Peters Monday, January 30, at 7 pm in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation building, 3707 Eastern Ave., Davenport. In a program sponsored by the adult religious education committee of the Congregation, open to the public, the speakers will show pictures of their recent trip and tell what they learned about Cuba during the 53rd anniversary of the Revolution there. Race: the Power of Illusion
The Rev. Jay Wolin will present a class based on a film of that title in five sessions beginning Wednesday at 7 pm, February 1, in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation meeting place, 3707 Eastern Ave, Davenport. Discussions in a safe environment will be part of the series, which is open to the public. Attendance at all the sessions is encouraged, but not required. Other dates are Feb. 8, 15, 22 and 29. On Saturday, January 28 from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M. the Wapsi River Environmental Education Center will be hosting a Toasty Toes Workshop. Converting a pile of outgrown or underutilized t-shirts into colorful, cozy rugs has never been easier; especially with the help of a most unique loom – a hula hoop! Each participant needs to bring about a dozen T-shirts (boy’s size L or equivalent (men’s/women’s size S or girl’s size L/XL) work well, but other sizes can be adapted) and a pair of sharp, fabric scissors. If you have access to a quilting tool called a rotary cutter, consider bringing it with the mat and ruler. Looms will be provided. This program is ideal for beginning weavers, and would appeal to families, scout groups as well as individuals. Walk-ins are welcome, but pre-registration is appreciated by calling (563) 328-3286.
The Wapsi River Environmental Education Center can be found 6 miles south of Wheatland or 1 mile northwest of Dixon, Iowa by taking County Road Y4E. Then turn north at 52nd Avenue and follow the signs for about 1 mile. |

TOBYMAC UNPLUGGED - A Night of Stories and Songs, featuring special guest Jamie Grace, is coming this Fall to select cities. It will be a totally different TobyMac show, a time where it’s not about the lights, smoke, big stage, numerous musicians… instead it will be more intimate and personal, a “storyteller’s night” where TobyMac will share where the songs came from.
