About Petland

The late Sandy Weerts had a vision to bring a feeling of peace to those who have lost a family pet and companion in death. Oakdale Memorial Gardens has honored her with a lovely garden to commemorate the lives of these dear family friends. It is called “Love of Animals” Petland. Among the flowers, oak trees and rare dwarf conifers, pets and service animals alike are buried with honor and dignity.

About Oakdale Memorial Gardens

Oakdale Memorial Gardens (www.oakdalememorialgardens.org) was established in 1857 and is an independent, non-profit cemetery located on 78+ acres along Eastern Avenue in the heart of Davenport, Iowa. It is one of the Quad Cities oldest and most beautiful cemeteries, boasting century-old Oaks, gently rolling hills and knolls, and a beautiful reflecting pond near the cemetery entrance.

From September 6 to 22, 2013, the Quad Cities hosts East West Riverfest, a community-wide, two-week celebration of the arts, culture and heritage thriving on this bend of the Mississippi River. Over 300 events will take place at almost 100 various theaters, music venues, galleries, historic sites, museums, parks, and attractions on both sides of the river in the Quad Cities. For more information, visit www.eastwestriverfest.com or the official Facebook page.

Quad Cities Ballet Folkloric Performing Saturday.

The Hispanic children dancers that performed for us last year are back again this Saturday and will perform at 10:45 and 11:30 on the main stage.  Last year this troupe did a full presentation of their historic spanish dances complete with colorful dresses for the senoritas and handsome suites for the seniors.  Come early and enjoy the market, its likely to be a full house like last year.

You know we have great fruits and vegetables, but did you know, we have wonderful bakers in the market also? Take a look at these fresh and delicious loaves of bread.  You can find them from several vendors both inside and out.

The Market has some of the most discriminating shoppers in the Quad Cities.  Here is Executive Chef Jeremy Charles from Duck City Bistro selecting produce for his dinner service.  Chef Jeremy says he likes to attend the Market and select his produce personally to get the best quality for his customers.  Chef Jeremy takes great pride in his high quality culinary art and starting with high quality produce enhances his skill.

Eat healthy! Eat buffalo meat! How? Come to the market and talk to the producers.  We have all kinds of fresh meats, eggs, cheese, oils and of course produce.  You can try fresh grilled bratwurst and know what you are eating.

Shoppers get to chose from some  of the best products that the QCA has to offer and the money they spend stays right here in the community.  As a not for profit corporation, the Freight House Farmers Market, gives back to the community through educational programs, free entertainment, healthy living choices and by operating a clean, safe and fun Market.  Come and enjoy!

American Cancer Society plans unique fundraiser for dogs, owners

Davenport, Iowa) – The fight against cancer has gone to the dogs as the American Cancer Society’s Bark For Life event takes place this September. Area pooches, with owners in tow, will take to the track to dig up a cure for cancer. Bark For Life adds a twist to the Society’s traditional Relay For Life event, serving as a fundraising activity to honor the care-giving qualities of canine companions while supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society.

This noncompetitive walk is planned for September 14, 2013 at Centennial Park, Davenport Iowa and will include an opening ceremony at 9:00am.  Our Honorary Dog K-9 Deker will lead our first lap followed by best dressed contests, vender booths and demos.

“Many pet owners consider their dogs a part of their family, especially those furry friends who lend a great amount of comfort and support during a loved one’s cancer battle,” said Mary Schenck. “Bark For Life is the canine counterpart to Relay For Life, a very family friendly movement that celebrates our canine caregivers, just as we honor other family members who support their loved ones who are fighting cancer during Relay For Life.”

Event organizers are still recruiting dogs and their owners to take part in this year’s Bark For Life. To register, contact Mary at 563-503-0068 or visit www.RelayForLife.org/BarkScottCountyIA.

A special thanks to the generosity of our 2013 presenting sponsors FOX 18 and Nestle’ Purina as well as the community support for this year’s event. Funds raised through Bark For Life support the American Cancer Society’s comprehensive cancer-fighting mission to help people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, to help people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis, to find cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery, and to fight back against cancer by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end cancer for good. As a global grassroots force of three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping you stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early, helping you get well by being there for you during and after a diagnosis, by finding cures through groundbreaking discovery and fighting back through public policy. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.8 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, an estimated 13.7 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
