Male Giraffe Calf Born at Niabi Zoo PDF Print E-mail
News Releases - Local Events
Written by Marc Heinzman
Tuesday, 05 June 2012 14:50

Coal Valley, IL– June 2, 2012 – Niabi Zoo is extremely happy to announce the birth of its second male giraffe calf on Friday, June 1, at 2:59 am. This is the fourth giraffe born at Niabi Zoo since 2007.

The baby giraffe, which has not yet been named, was born to Twiga, Niabi Zoo’s 6 year old female. This is Twiga’s second baby. Zuri, a female, was born in April of 2010. The father is Kenya, a 6 year old male. The baby weighed 152 pounds and stands about 6 feet tall.

“Twiga and her new son are doing very well,” says Interim Zoo Director Marc Heinzman. “We’re all very excited to have our fourth giraffe born here in only five years. We had been waiting for a long time for Twiga to have her baby, so it’s great to have him here finally.”

Twiga and her son will be kept off display for a few days to allow the two giraffes time to bond in a quiet setting. Later this week she will be out for public viewing.

The giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis, is the world’s tallest mammal. Average height for an adult giraffe is 14-19 feet and the average weight is 1,800 – 3,000 pounds. They are herbivores, using their 18 inch tongues to help pull leaves from the branches of tall trees. Although their necks are unusually long, they have only seven neck vertebrae, just like humans.

After a gestation of approximately 14 months, giraffes give birth standing up. The calf drops five to six feet to the ground. This fall helps the calf take its first breath. Calves can stand usually within a few hours and run with their mothers within ten hours. Six feet tall a birth, calves normally weigh 100 – 150 pounds and can grow as much as one inch per day.

Hello!

Friday Live at 5 is back!  Colbalt Blue will kick off the first Friday party of the summer in the RME/Skybridge courtyard.  Woodfire Grill's patio will be open as well, so swing by for a drink and some tunes and plan to return each week.  Also playing at RME this week are Ink, River Water Tribe, The Blushing Gun & The Post Mortems, and River Prairie Minstrels.

RME will host The Devil Makes Three on the Redstone Room Stage  Sunday night, too!  With elements of ragtime, blues, country, folk, and rockabilly, this is a show you don't want to miss.  The live lunch series this week will feature   Lars Rehnberg and Marc and Brandi Janssen. Also stop by to check out the RME Guitar Circle, John Beacher, Acoustic Music Club, and the Blues Cafe.

QC Pridefest This weekend also marks the annual QC Pridefest.  The street fair features shopping, a carnival, interactive arts, and a smorgasbord of summer fun.   While you're downtown, stop by the Beetle to Benz Exhibit at the German American Heritage Center and check out a new exhibit or class at the Figge Art Museum.

The defending Midwest League Champion River Bandits are in the middle of a six game home stand heading into the weekend!  From Thirst-day Thursday to fireworks, there's plenty of family fun ahead at Modern Woodmen Park.

As we get into the summer months, don't forget that River's Edge features public ice time almost every day of the week.  If you ever need to beat the summer heat, come on down to participate in Public Skates, Drop-In Hockey, Skating Lessons, and more.

Rhythm City Casino has live music this weekend featuring North of 40 and River City 6.  North of 40 is an energetic country group that plays top 40 and country classics, while River City 6 swings everything from traditional Jazz and Big Band, to Dixieland and New Orleans style.

Night Storm Dance Party rolls into the RiverCenter's Great Hall on Tuesday, and don't forget that our summer festivals will be here soon!  Groups interested in volunteering at Street Fest presented by Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center can sign-up on the new downtown website.

Wilco Have you picked up tickets yet to see Wilco at the Adler Theatre in July?  Don't wait until the last minute!  Buy tickets now and ensure you get good seats to see one of the best bands in the world play right in your own backyard!

See you downtown!

Schilling to Host HASC Readiness Chairman Forbes PDF Print E-mail
News Releases - Local Events

Congressmen to tour RIA, host Defending Our Defenders forum, visit Rockford’s SupplyCore with Rep. Manzullo

Washington, DC – Congressman Bobby Schilling (IL-17) announced today that House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Subcommittee on Readiness Chairman J. Randy Forbes (VA-04) will be visiting western Illinois on Monday June 4th and Tuesday June 5th.  On Monday June 4th Forbes and Schilling will be touring the Rock Island Arsenal and hosting a forum on the region’s defense manufacturing capabilities and how local communities will be impacted by massive defense cuts.  Forbes and Schilling will be joining Congressman Don Manzullo (IL-16) in Rockford on Tuesday June 5th to visit SupplyCore, where they will again discuss defense spending levels.

“Many thanks to Chairman Forbes and his staff for recognizing our area’s invaluable contributions to our national defense,” Schilling said. “Next week’s events will be great opportunities for folks in our local defense community to share with Chairman Forbes the impact triggered defense cuts will have on their ability to support our troops and contribute to and to our local economy and to America’s national defense.  I will continue working with Chairman Forbes and my colleagues in the House on a bipartisan basis to ensure cuts that the Obama Administration calls ‘catastrophic’ and Defense Secretary Panetta calls ‘disastrous’ don’t come to fruition.”
  • Monday June 4th – Forbes and Schilling host HASC Readiness Subcommittee Defending Our Defenders forum on defense spending from 5:30-7:00pm at the Western Illinois University Moline Riverfront Campus, Room 111, 3300 River Drive, Moline, Illinois 61265.
  • Tuesday June 5th – Forbes, Schilling, and Manzullo visit SupplyCore from 9:00-10:00am at 303 North Main Street #800, Rockford, Illinois 61101.
These events are part of a series of listening sessions that Chairman Forbes is hosting around the country on the impact that defense cuts will have local economies and America’s national security.  Chairman Forbes is also inviting feedback from members of the public on defense cuts.  To submit feedback, please visit http://forbes.house.gov/Forms/Form/?ID=2004.

Press interested in attending the Defending Our Defenders forum or the SupplyCore discussion should contact Andie Pivarunas for more information and to RSVP.
