The Quad Cities Comic Book Convention will be held on Saturday March 23 at the Ramada Inn in Bettendorf, IA. The Ramada Inn is located at 3020 Utica Rd (I-74 @ Kimberly Rd / Spruce Hills Dr, IA Exit 2). It will be open to the public from 10 AM to 4 PM and admission for the public is free. Dealers from three states specializing in comic books new and old, toys and related. Or if you have old comics lying around that you no longer want bring them by dealers are buying. WHO:   NorthPark and SouthPark Malls will host a Miss Sunburst model search and baby contest on Saturday, March 16.

WHAT:  Entries are being accepted now for the Miss Sunburst model search and baby contest.  Winners will go to the state finals in May. The baby pageant is for boys and girls. The age groups are as follows:

Baby – under one year
Tiny – 1 year
Little – 2-3 years
7 – 10
11 – 13
14 – 17
18 – 27

A king and queen will be chosen in each age group. They will receive a crown and trophy and runners-up in each age group will also receive a trophy and crown. The model search is for girls ages 4 – 27 years old. The age groups are as follows:

Each age group will have a group line up and optional events will be judged. After the group lineup, each child will go on stage one at a time, with one adult and come to the center of the stage. A winner in each age group will receive a crown and trophy and runners-up will also receive a trophy and crown. Each contestant will receive a crown and trophy. Entry forms are available at the Guest Service Center in front of Younkers at NorthPark Mall and at the Mall Office in SouthPark Mall. March 8, 2013 (Davenport, IA) – The Rotary Club of Davenport will host Dr. Jason Glass, director of the Iowa Department of Education, on Monday, March 11, 2013 at noon at The Outing Club in Davenport.  Dr. Glass has been the director of the Iowa Department of Education since his appoint by Governor Terry Branstad and confirmation by the Iowa Senate in December 2010.

Under Director Glass’s leadership, the Department has focused on the values of demonstrating courageous leadership, promoting innovation in education, and acting as a servant to schools and communities in Iowa.

As director, he works with the Governor, legislators, the State Board of Education, and Iowans in supporting efforts and initiatives to restore the state’s tradition as a national leader in education and to lead transformative change.


The Iowa Department of Education director is appointed by the Governor to serve a four-year term, subject to confirmation by the Iowa Senate. The director's role is to provide leadership for the department as it carries out the policies and programs prescribed by state law and the State Board of Education; and to ensure department personnel are providing the necessary oversight and support for all schools, educators and students to meet their academic goals. The department director also serves as the executive officer of the State Board of Education, a nonvoting role.

March 8th - Ascentra Branches - Casual for a Cause Day. Employees pay $5 to dress casually. Proceeds collected will go towards St. Bladrick’s Foundation, a cause dedicated to curing childhood cancer.  Locally, the “shaving of the heads” will take place at the DeWitt Just Irish Enough Parade & St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser on Saturday, March 16th. Ascentra’s Casual for a Cause days are held twice a month where each staff member donates $5 to dress casual with all proceeds benefitting a local organization or family in need.  Anyone is welcome to join this effort and donate to this great cause.

March 9th - Trivia Night at the LeClaire Civic Center benefiting the LeClaire Civic Club Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with trivia starting at 7 p.m. Participants may bring beer, wine, snacks and soda. Paul and his team have been working hard for months. In mid November they uncovered an opening to a tunnel that was part of the Underground Railroad.
