WHEN: 2-22-12

TIME: 7 p.m.

WHERE: American Legion, 121 W. Bryant St., Walcott, IA 52773

WHAT: Dorris, a resident of Davenport, IA, will be available to sign copies of his Self-Help book, Life Is Too Short: Life Is What We Make It. He will also be speaking on the topic.

Fear not, for in Life Is Too Short: Life Is What We Make It, author David Dorris shows you how to approach life's problems and that making the right choices is easier than you think. Life is like a baseball game where the pitcher is constantly throwing you curveballs. As this is the case, do you want to simply be a spectator, or do you want to get in the game and face life head-on? Although it may sound simple sometimes, life is not an easy game to play. There are many challenges to overcome and many choices you have to make. None of you have a choice as to how you come into the world; however, you do have a choice as to the kind of life you live. Follow David in Life Is Too Short: Life Is What We Make It, and find out for yourself how you too can knock life's curveballs out of the park.

Sunday, March 4th from 12:30pm until 5:00pm at St. Ann's Church in Long Grove.

Linda Mohr and her family lost their uninsured home and many of their belongings to a fire in December 2011.  They are currently living with family and friends.  Linda is retired and her daughter, Heater, is employed through Oscar Mayer.  Linda's sister, Gail Stevens (as known as the Horse Lady), is a bus driver for the North Scott School District.  This family has volunteered several years of service to Scott County 4-H and this benefit is an opportunity to give back to them for all they've done for others.

Anyone wishing to donate items for the raffle please contact Nancy or Samantha Urmie at 563-285-6080.  Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation for the family may do so at any First Central State Bank location, where an account is established under Linda Mohr.

The benefit will include a free-will donation dinner and raffle.  The dinner menu includes pulled-pork sandwich, baked beans, chips, drink and dessert.

Open Mic Contest The increasingly popular Dubstep genre will be on full display at River Music Experience on Saturday when Ghost Science takes the stage in the Redstone Room.  Additional programming at RME this week includes performances by Paul Waters & The Lonesome Tears, Firesale, We Shall Be Bandits, River Prairie Minstrels, and more.  The Annual Open Mic Contest begins on Wednesday, too!

A GIFT THAT MONEY CAN’T BUY AT MOLINE PUBLIC LIBRARY PDF Print E-mail
News Releases - Local Events
Written by Jennifer Christiansen
Friday, 03 February 2012 15:06

Learn how to preserve your family’s history and stories with A Gift That Money Can’t Buy, Tuesday February 21st, 7:00 p.m. at the Moline Public Library.  Presenter Jeffrey Bockman explains how to use basic forms to record family data, as well as basics for identifying people in photographs, basic preservation, and how to record unique family stories.

Registration is required for this free event, and can be done by visiting the Moline Public Library at 3210 - 411st Street, Moline, or by calling 309-524-2470.  This program is made possible in part by an award from the Illinois Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Illinois General Assembly.

Mr. Bockman is a genealogy lecturer and writer.  He was a contributing editor for Everton’s Genealogical Helper and a feature writer for Heritage Quest Magazine.  He is the author of Giving Your Family a Gift That Money Can’t Buy, a book that encourages people to record and preserve their family’s history.

A Gift That Money Can’t Buy is presented in conjunction with the traveling exhibit In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak, on display December 28th, 2011 through February 24th, 2012.  In a Nutshell: The Worlds of Maurice Sendak was organized by the Rosenbach Museum & Library, Philadelphia, and developed by Nextbook, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Jewish literature, culture, and ideas, and the American Library Association Public

Programs Office. The national tour of the exhibit has been made possible by grants from the Charles H. Revson Foundation, the Righteous Persons Foundation, the David Berg Foundation, and an anonymous donor, with additional support from Tablet Magazine: A New Read on Jewish Life.
