What's New at QCI

QCI held its annual TACO NIGHT FUNDRAISER on July 17th at Azteca #1 in Davenport.  We had great food and fellowship and raised $2,500.00 for the work of QCI! Thank you to all that joined us that night and made our event successful. Many thanks to Gustavo and all at Azteca for sponsoring this event to benefit Quad Cities Interfaith. 

Prayer Vigil for Jobs and Jobs Equity is  
Sunday, September 23rd

Join local clergy and lay leaders as we come together for music , prayer and to ask invited elected officials and other decision makers to listen
to our call for local jobs and work force diversity for the passenger rail project coming to the Quad Cities.

QCI Issue Updates

Transportation and Jobs Equity
The Task Force and the QCI Clergy are planning a Prayer Vigil for Jobs and Jobs Equity on Sunday, September 23rd at 6:00pm at First Lutheran Church, Moline. This vigil will bring together local clergy and lay leaders to pray, sing and call on our elected officials and other decision makers to listen to the local community's call for local jobs and workforce diversity for the passenger rail project. As part of  Gamaliel of Illinois, the task force is also working to secure a State wide Project Labor Agreement (PLA) from the contractors ,unions and Department of Transportation that will include requirements for diversity in the work force on all transportation projects in Illinois. The Task Force is also looking to build a local monitoring committee in early 2013, that will hold accountable IL DOT on the Community Benefits Agreement principles it agreed to. The Fundraising Task Force next meets on Friday , August 17th at 12 noon at the Blue Cat , Rock Island. The Fundraising Committee is currently working on a 25th Anniversary Fundraising Celebration for QCI to be held Friday, October 5th, 2012 at the Rolgaski Center at St. Ambrose from 6-9. We are very excited about this event and will give you more details as our event details unfold.  If you have any questions, call us at 563-322-4910. We hope to have all of you there. We are very excited about all the FUN we are having this year! Fundraising is also planning an end of the year appeal and schedule of events for 2013.

Immigration Task Force is planning a fall film viewing and panel discussion of human trafficking. Film title will be announced along with date, time, and place in September's newsletter.


Local QCI leaders attended the Gamaliel Statewide Education Leadership Conference in Chicago on August 11th. Subjects included Punitive discipline for African American and Latinos students and the need for alternative community and faith based initiatives, Dual Language Eduction, and Statewide Opportunity to Learn and Education Redlining Campaign. Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy of East Moline is hosting a 500 seat Texas Hold'em Tournament on September 9, 2012 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall, 800 17th Street, Silvis.

The entry fee is $80.00 ($60.00 to prize pool and $20.00 to Grace)

The tournament features two session of 250 players. The first session is at 12 noon and the second session is at 5PM. Projected Prize pool is $30,000, with first prize $10,000 guaranteed. The top 30 from each session will play at 9:45 for the money. The tourney will pay to the top 42 players.

Mark Ross to guide club in 55th year of “Service Above Self”
Bettendorf, IA – The Bettendorf Rotary Club announces its officers for 2012-2013. The gavel was passed from Scott Naumann to Mark Ross who will serve as President of the club for the next year.
Ross is a consultant with IGO Partners. As an active entrepreneur, he has created several successful companies in addition to serving in management positions with McGladrey & Pullen and Per Mar Security Services.  Besides his participation in Bettendorf Rotary, Ross has served the community as a board member for the Scott County Regional Authority and as an Alderman for the City of Bettendorf.

Quad Cities through Keokuk, IA

Davenport, IA/ August 3, 2012– A massive volunteer effort to clean the mighty Mississippi is about to begin its third phase.  The Great Mississippi River Clean-up, which began as a one-day, simultaneous event now encompasses 20 cities and is growing into a summer-long campaign.  Living Lands & Waters (LL&W) will launch phase three August 11th from the Quad Cities through Oquawka, Illinois.  This year’s cleanup began on June 13th, when volunteers gathered along the Mississippi from Saint Paul, MN to La Crosse, WI, pulling garbage out of the waters.

Originally a one day event, the Great Mississippi River clean-up has had to expand to a summer long excursion due to the overwhelming volunteer response.  In all, 2,500-3,000 volunteers are expected to take part in this year’s clean-up of this iconic waterway.

The next scheduled phases of the clean-up are:

  • August 11th – Quad-Cities to Keokuk, IA
  • September 15th – Quincy, IL through St. Louis, MO.

LL&W Founder and President Chad Pregracke calls the shift a logical progression in the life cycle of this massive undertaking.  Pregracke  says, “Doing the clean up in phases will help bring our important message to more people.  And that’s part of what Living Lands & Waters is all about:  bringing the health of our rivers to the attention of everyone who depends upon them, and then working to improve it.”

Living Lands & Waters is a 501(c) (3) environmental organization established in 1998 and headquartered in East Moline, Illinois.  LL&W has removed more than six million pounds of trash through cleanup efforts along the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Illinois and Potomac rivers since its launch 15 years ago. LL&W also coordinated flood relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and the historic floods in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Lake Delton, Wisconsin in 2008.

MONTICELLO, IOWA-Fresh pineapples will be in Iowa for the 35th Annual Pineapple Sale for Camp Courageous the week of August 1st-5th.  The pineapples will be on sale at nearly 30 Hy-Vee Stores in Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids, Cedar Falls, Clinton, Coralville, Davenport, Dubuque, Iowa City, Marion, and Waterloo.  Most locations will have the ability to core and place the pineapple in a container for the customer.  A dollar from the sale of each pineapple will go to benefit Camp Courageous, a year-round respite and recreational facility, serving over 6,000 individuals with special needs annually.  Customers not interested in pineapple, are encouraged to buy a gift card for food and send it to camp.  

The 34th Annual Pineapple Gala, will be Friday, August 17th at the Cedar Rapids Marriott beginning at 5:30 p.m. This is one of Iowa’s largest charity silent and live auction with nearly 400 items ranging from $5 to condos. An exceptional Hawaiian dinner, entertainment, and door prizes, including a trip for two to Hawaii, are planned for this year’s Gala.  Volunteer Emcees for the evening will be Ralph Palmer and Kathryn Foxx and the volunteer auctioneer will be Todd Smith.  Tickets are $50/each or a table of 10 for $500.
