In keeping with its motto of “Service Above Self,’ the Rotary Club of Rock Island has undertaken another initiative to enhance the lives of children in Rock Island with its adoption of Earl Hanson Elementary School.

The adoption was formally instated with a brief opening ceremony held at the school’s grounds on Friday, November 14. Rotarians were treated to a student-guided tour of the school and a reception with the staff and teachers in the library. Rotary President Diane Koster presented a certificate as a tangible symbol of the club’s newly established commitment to the school.

The club has already executed several activities, including the coordination of an Angel Tree program, providing books for the library, arranging for math tutors and having war veteran members talk to students about Veteran’s Day. Rock Island Rotary Literacy Program Co-chair Anne McGlynn vowed that the club would become actively involved in many of the school’s activities. “We hope our efforts here will make a difference in students lives and empower their leadership and service potential in the future,” she envisioned.
