Based on his latest book The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, Jack Canfield will present strategies on determining goals, developing necessary tools, shifting attitudes, and mastering key disciplines to use entrepreneurial time effectively. Canfield is the co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. "Success Principles" is sponsored by the St. Ambrose University College of Business Student Advisory Council. Upper-level general seating for the October 28 event at St. Ambrose's Galvin Fine Arts Center is $50, and lower-level preferred seating is $75. Members of the Young Professionals Network and neXt Professionals Leadership Council unveiled the name for the merged organization at their monthly social event on October 2. The organization will now be known as The Network: Young Professionals of the Quad Cities. The new identity and accompanying brand represent the final steps of a merger, announced in January, between the Young Professionals Network, an initiative of the Illinois Quad City Chamber of Commerce, and DavenportOne's neXt Professionals. The merger was part of a larger workforce-development plan of the Quad City Chamber of Commerce Federation in an effort to create a regional approach to talent attraction and retention. The Network represents more than 2,300 professionals in their 20s and 30s from the Iowa and Illinois Quad Cities.
The Poverty Diet Challenge is a Student Food Drive initiative designed to expose individuals to the realities of living on food stamps. Students from 21 area high schools answered the Poverty Diet Challenge by collecting pledges from individuals. Every person who signed a pledge form committed to living on $3.29 per day for two days for food and beverages. USDA Food & Nutrition Services data (as of June 26, 2008) provides that the average 2007 Illinois food-stamp benefit was $104.65 per person per month (or $3.49 per day). The 2007 Iowa food stamp benefit was $92.81 per person per month (or $3.09 per day).
For the seventh consecutive year, Quad Cities health-care consumers have chosen Genesis Health System for a Consumer Choice Award. The award identifies hospitals that health-care consumers have chosen as having the highest quality and image in more than 250 markets throughout the United States. The awards are based on an annual independent survey conducted by National Research Corporation.
Alternatives for the Older Adult is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The not-for-profit agency serves more than 12,000 adults age 60 and older each year, along with their families and caregivers, in Scott County and western Illinois. Hundreds of Muscatine residents will be on the move on October 25 to end Alzheimer's disease at the Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk. This is the first time that a Memory Walk has been staged in Muscatine. The three-mile walk will raise public awareness and funds for the fight against Alzheimer's. In 2007, Memory Walk raised more than $35 million for care and support of those affected by the disease, and for research for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Alzheimer's. The Davenport Public Library at 321 Main Street will hold a genealogy night on Sunday, October 26, from 4 to 9 p.m. Participants will have after-hours access to the collection of genealogy databases, books, and census records. The Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce recently ended its four-week total-resource campaign. Last month a fleet of volunteers scoured Bettendorf and its surrounding communities to attract new members and sponsorships for the chamber. The campaign exceeded its $165,000 goal and raised $207,000. The chamber also added 60 new members. Money raised from new sponsorships and new members is earmarked for projects, events, and related activities throughout 2009.
