Beaux Arts Fair Moves to Figge Plaza Print

The Beaux Arts Fair will be held at its new location on the Figge plaza on Saturday, September 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fair features 73 exhibitors from several states working in painting, drawing, printmaking, weaving, jewelry, and crafts. Admission is free to the fair and to the Figge during that weekend. There will be a children's activities tent, and concessions will be sold. For more information, visit BeauxArtsFair.com.

Helen Klein is a retired nurse who began running at the age of 55 (in 1978) on a homemade track around her front yard and finished last in her first race - a 10-miler. Now in her 80s, Helen has started and finished more than 100 marathons and more than 140 ultra-marathons. The Quad Cities Marathon will present her as its featured speaker at the Happy Joe's Pasta Party at 5 p.m. on September 27 at the Stoney Creek Inn, 1701 River Drive in Moline. The Moline Public Library will host author John Hallwas as he discusses his latest book, Dime Novel Desperadoes: The Notorious Maxwell Brothers, on Thursday, September 11. The Davenport Public Library's Fairmount Street Library offers a meeting place for the Teen Volunteer Council, a group that helps the library provide programs and materials for teens. It also provides opportunities such as fundraising and networking with peers. The organization meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at 3000 North Fairmount Street. U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has announced that Iowa State Department of Public Health has received $1.4 million from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The grant will be used to fund health investigations and research prevention methods.

 

The Rock Island Public Library has added the online version of the Value Line Investment Survey to its collection of free electronic resources. Value Line is now available to patrons at all three locations, and, with a Rock Island Library Card, from a home computer as well. The library previously subscribed to the weekly print version, which is still available at the Main and 30/31 branch libraries. To use the Value Line Investment Survey from home or a personal computer with WiFi access, go to the library's Web site (RIPL.lib.il.us), click the Value Line icon, and enter your Rock Island Library card barcode number where indicated. Remote access is available to Rock Island Library cardholders only.

 

The Resource Investment Committee of United Way of the Quad Cities recently awarded Christian Care a grant of $4,500 in support of children's programs and services offered at the agency's Domestic Violence Shelter. The funding will help Christian Care expand current children's programs to include counseling and play therapy. Christian Care Domestic Violence Shelter served 122 women and 99 children fleeing lives of violence and abuse and 165 nonresidential clients last year. The shelter provided more than 3,300 nights of lodging and more than 9,000 meals to residential clients in 2007.
