|“Journey of Hope” Coming to Davenport|

On Wednesday, July 23, a team of cyclists participating in the "Journey of Hope" will arrive in Davenport as part of a nine-week, 4,000-mile cycling event across the country to raise funds and awareness for people with disabilities. The team expects to arrive in the afternoon and then have dinner and a friendship visit, with details to be determined, at 4:30 p.m. The Journey of Hope is a program of Push America, the national philanthropy of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, which raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities. The Journey of Hope team consists of men from Pi Kappa Phi chapters across the country. The team will cycle an average of 75 miles per day, beginning in San Francisco and ending in Washington, DC, on August 16. Living Lands & Waters will host its annual Barge Party at the Lake Davenport Sailing Club on River Drive and Oneida Street in Davenport on Thursday, August 14, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets for this celebration are available now at $35 per person from (http://www.livinglandsandwaters.org). The Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) board of directors has announced a new slate of officers that includes Vice Chair Doug Walter of Bettendorf. IFA's mission is to finance, administer, advance, and preserve affordable housing and to promote community and economic development for Iowans.
The Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault will receive a $1.7-million grant, from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office on Violence Against Women. This money will fund education, training, and enhanced services to end violence against women.
A free educational program for Spanish-speaking people about the signs and treatments of Alzheimer's disease will be held on Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Templo Alabanza Menonita, 613 Third Street in Moline. Volunteers are needed for RiverWay 2008, celebrating the "recreational river" from August 21 through 24. Opportunities include helping set up and run the water-screen movies and "Taming of the Slough" at Bass St. Landing, Backwater Gamblers on the river, Living on the River Expo, and placement/removal of picnic blankets on the riverfront. Additionally, volunteers are needed for the Upper Mississippi River Conference from August 21 through 23.
