Last Legislative Forum of Season to Be Held Saturday Print

The last Scott County forum of this legislative session will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the Rogalski Center on the St. Ambrose University campus. Coffee and cookies will be provided starting at 10:10 a.m. The public is invited to discuss issues with representatives and senators from Scott County. These forums are sponsored by the American Association of University Women, Davenport Business & Professional Women, Scott County Farm Bureau, and UniServ.

 

 

 

Rivermont Collegiate students have been selected from among 3,500 contestants to advance to the state National History Day competition in Des Moines. Two projects will compete at the state junior-division finals on April 28: a paper titled "Anthony Burns & the Boston Resistance: Paradigm of the Divisive Fugitive Slave Act," and a group performance on "William Wilberforce: The Man Who Made Them See." In addition, two groups will move on to the state senior-division finals on May 5. The first group placed with its Web site "IBM & the Holocaust: The Dark Side of Modern Technology" (http://www.korworks.com), and the second group placed with its exhibit and presentation on "Uganda's Struggle for Survival: A Compromise in Waiting."

 


The Moline Public Schools Foundation Annual Spring Gala will be held on Friday, April 18, from 6 until 10 p.m., at the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Clubhouse, 1838 Gillespie on Arsenal Island. Starting in May, economic-stimulus payments of up to $600 for individuals ($1,200 for married couples) will be issued by the IRS based on 2007 tax returns. Parents also get $300 for each eligible child. Most people only have to file a 2007 individual income-tax return to receive a payment. Even people who are usually exempt from filing need to submit a return to receive the stimulus payment. Sunshine's Performing Arts Studio & Resale Store is located at 1303 30th Street in Rock Island and has recently expanded. The business will hold an open house on April 6 at 1 p.m., featuring vocal performances by its students. The studio also teaches tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, tumbling, poms, and acting. The RiverCenter Adler Theatre in Davenport received a 2007 Prime Site Award of Excellence from the Facilities Media Group for venue excellence. Award winners were selected by a panel of industry experts based on the physical and structural dynamics of a building, the venue staff, and the level of technology of its sound, lighting, and staging. The RiverCenter Adler Theatre is managed by VenuWorks of Ames, Iowa.

 


Trinity Regional Health System has expanded the features of its Web site to include a new online-bill-payment feature for patients. To get started, patients can click on the "online bill pay" link under the "for patients" section of Trinity's home page at (http://www.TrinityQC.com). The online-payment system accepts credit cards, debit cards, and electronic checks. It also allows patients to set up a credit-card- or check-payment plan, access financial-assistance information, and view online-payment history.

 


The German American Heritage Center, in conjunction with St. Ambrose University and the Chicago Zither Club, have scheduled a public mass zither concert featuring world-class master Tomy Temerson from Germany. The event will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street in Davenport. The suggested donation is $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Advance tickets can be obtained from the German American Heritage Center, 712 West Second Street in Davenport, which is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

 


Antoinette Holman, a member of the Davenport West High "Connections" show choir, recently sang her way to the "Best Female Vocalist" award at the National Show Choir competition held in Nashville, Tennessee. "Connections" was among 12 high-school show choirs from across the U.S. to perform on the Grand Ole Opry stage March 14 and 15.

 


The Dave Paris Group will bring its modern-rock and blues act to Davenport, performing Saturday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at LP Studios, 332 East Second Street. The group was part of last summer's "Praise in the District" event in Moline. The LP Studios show will start with an acoustic set performed by Eldridge-based band Park Lane.
