•The Quad City Arts Metro Arts program for aspiring artists closes this week with a celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, in the District of Rock Island’s Arts Alley. The young-adult participants in the five-week program were paid apprentices in one of five areas: graphic novels, kinetic sculpture, contemporary music composition and performance, kite design, and mural design.
You can see the fruits of their labors at this closing celebration.
•An opening reception for an exhibit of floral watercolors by Caroline England will be held on Sunday, July 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Quad City Botanical Center, 2525 Fourth Avenue in Rock Island. The show will run through September 10 and features 32 framed original watercolors. Admission to the exhibit and the botanical center is $3.50 for adults, and the facility is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
•Plenty of big musical acts are coming through the area in the coming weeks. Fans of garage rock shouldn’t miss that other Detroit band, the Von Bondies, choosing Gabe’s in Iowa City for their Iowa debut, on July 24. The band got a big boost from Jack White, who shepherded the group into the spotlight and then infamously got in a bar fight with its singer. Twenty-one-year-old country siren Miranda Lambert plays at Quad City Live, also on July 24. Avril Lavigne and Butch Walker grace the stage of the Mark of the Quad Cities on July 23, and 3 Doors Down visits on July 26.
•The Rock Island County Fair kicks off on Tuesday, July 19, and runs through Saturday, July 23, at the fairgrounds in East Moline. The fair’s grandstand features a battle of the bands on Tuesday, races, demolition derbies, and fireworks. For a full listing of events, visit (http://www.rockislandcountyfair.com).
