Nice, bit too bright
by Shawn
on March 18, 2010
Ate dinner here last week, and the food was very good. I should have had something other than a basic gyro (no tomato), but that was good, if a little standard. The onions could have been a little more prominent. I like my gyros' onions to have a crisp bite. The baba ghanouj I split with my girlfriend, though not among my favorite Middle Eastern dishes, was very good. Smoky and creamy. She had a falafel wrap (finally falefel in the QC!!!) and she said it was good (but not as good as I make:)
The service was extremely friendly and the owner who introduced himself was very gracious and seemed to sincerely desire genuine feedback.
The only criticism I'd lay against the Olive Tree Cafe, is that while the colors and decor of the place are a nice start, it still has very strip-mall-y feeling. The florescent lights are far too bright, and then when the owner's wife noticed us noticing the very pretty glass pendant lamps not being turned on, she flipped the switch, adding about 8 100-watt (seemingly) halogens to the mix.
I'd suggest looking at Exotic Thai in Moline (or on 53rd in Dav.) to see what can be dome with a restaurant in a strip mall, as far as lighting and decor are concerned.
Give this place a lower lit, cooler "oasis in the desert" kind of feel and it will be a "10."
