FLIPPED

Rob Reiner’s 1986 Stand by Me told us that we’ll never have better, more meaningful friends than the ones we had when we were 12. His new film, Flipped, tells us that we’ll never have better, more meaningful romances than the ones we had when we were 12. It’s touching, if a little sad, that it’s all apparently been downhill for the director since hitting his teen years, but does Reiner’s nostalgic yearning somehow excuse his latest for being so bland, saccharine, and childish? Set just a few years after Reiner’s summer-of-’59 hit, Flipped is like Stand by Me without profanity, dirty jokes, unforced camaraderie, and Kiefer Sutherland. In other words, it’s just a stone’s throw away from utterly excruciating.

Imagine an episode of TV's The West Wing performed at half-speed, and underwater, and you may begin to approximate the experience of the Richmond Hill Barn Theatre's opening-night performance of A Few Good Men.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III

Call it envy, call it sour grapes, call it schadenfreude, but I’ll admit to hugely enjoying the public meltdown of Tom Cruise, mostly because it’s finally making him interesting. Cruise has always been too bland to be true. He’s moderately proficient, and in several of his films – most recently Collateral and Minority Report – he’s even been impressive. But he has too few resources to draw upon as a performer. It would be hard to accuse Cruise of slouching on the job – he’s determined and earnest, and you can sense him trying to suggest interior life. But his line readings have no surprise and his on-screen performances rarely build; whenever a new scene begins, Cruise appears to have forgotten everything his character experienced in his previous scenes. He can’t seem to play more than one emotion, or one thought, at a time.

HIGH CRIMES

If Hollywood studios absolutely insist on feeding us one piece-of-crap potboiler after another, they could certainly do worse than the trashily entertaining military thriller High Crimes.
