Augumn Loose, Liv Lyman, Lauren VanSpeybroeck, and Becca Johnson in Legally Blonde: The MusicalLegally Blonde: The Musical is, of course, based on the 2001 hit starring Reese Witherspoon, a movie that led to a rather woebegone sequel in 2003’s Legally Blonde: Red, White, & Blonde. Yet while watching the original film’s stage version on Thursday, I felt that Red, White, & Blonde also would’ve been a fitting title for Quad City Music Guild’s terrifically peppy new presentation, considering that this solo-star-driven show came off, instead, as pretty wonderfully democratic.

Becca Meumann and Doug Johnson in barePassion counts for a lot in drama, and sincerity counts for a lot plus, and both qualities are in welcome abundance in the Center for Living Arts’ presentation of the adolescent-angst musical bare. Another theatrical commitment kept me away during opening weekend, but if you haven’t yet caught up with the show, I heartily recommend taking advantage of its three-weekend run; you could conceivably ask for a stronger production, but only a complete boor would dare ask for a more heartfelt one, or one that exuded more enthusiasm and feeling from its clearly, beautifully invested participants.

Joseph Maubach, Joel Collins, Tracy Pelzer-Timm, Jenny Winn, Sara King, Becca Meumann, and Linda Ruebling in XanaduThe District Theatre’s Xanadu is perhaps the silliest, cheesiest, guiltiest-pleasure piece of musical theatre I’ve yet seen on a local stage … and I loved it! Director Tristan Tapscott plays up the goofiness of this self-referential take on the 1980 cult-film favorite, finding delight in its pokes at the movie’s ridiculousness and in the infectiously energetic songs, and the resulting mix of fluff and flash adds up to two hours of pure entertainment.

Haley Nellis, Garrin Jost, and Aaron Lord in Spring AwakeningFriday's performance of the Center for Living Arts’ Spring Awakening wasn’t perfect. But it was in the production’s imperfections that its main strengths were revealed, because the earnestness in the actors’ portrayals wound up overshadowing the pitch problems, and the enthusiasm of director Dino Hayz’s young-adult cast – who performed the hell out of the piece – proved so infectious and stirring that the show still proved effective.

Benjie Lewis, Aaron Lord, Max Moline, and Andrew Bruning in Spring AwakeningDino Hayz is the creative director and co-owner of the Center for Living Arts, the Rock Island-based venue that, since 2006, has offered music and theatre (and musical theatre) classes for ages 18 and under, and has produced such stage presentations as Schoolhouse Rock Live! and Disney’s High School Musical.

Consequently, Hayz says that he and his performers have a pretty fair idea of how patrons might react to the Center’s latest theatrical offering.

“When we’re in rehearsal,” says Hayz, “at the end of Act I, we always say, ‘A-a-and ... blackout. Actors off, lights up, a good third of the audience walks out the door ... .”
