Steven Mondloch, Elyssa LeMay, and Ellenelle Gilliam in Something's AfootI am not a fan of the murder-mystery-comedy genre – but make the show a musical, and I’m not only interested, but eager to see it. Such is the case with Augustana College’s Something’s Afoot, a song-filled, murder-mystery romp reminiscent of an Agatha Christie story. Though not bad, the songs by James McDonald, David Vos, and Robert Gerlach, for the most part, aren’t great, nor particularly memorable. But happily, the production as a whole is still amusing from beginning to satisfying-and-unexpected end.

John D'Aversa, Joshua Malone, and Bill Cahill in subUrbiaAugustana College’s production of subUrbia features one of the most (if not the most) layered and fascinating sets I’ve yet seen on a local stage, as Adam Parboosingh's scenic design manages to give us both a brick storefront – including parking spaces, cement parking bumps, scaffolding, a dumpster, and even a period-appropriate, mid-'90s pay phone – and the fully stocked interior of a convenience store at the same time. Consequently, Parboosingh’s set rendered Friday’s performance interesting well before the play even started, offering much to take in visually while we waited for the proverbial curtain to rise.

Lilli Pickens, Samantha Kammerman, and Bill Cahill in Bat Boy: The MusicalA musical based on the Weekly World News' tabloid-famous Bat Boy screams “camp.” Augustana College’s production of Bat Boy: The Musical, however, is not campy enough, as a couple of the leading actors played their parts too seriously or sincerely during Friday’s performance, softening the effect of this musical’s craziness.

Kat Martin, Jacquelyn Schmidt, and William Cahill in Our TownPlaywright Thornton Wilder’s Our Town is one of the few preachy plays that I don’t mind for its sermonizing. With his blatant, nearly Buddhist statements and themes about living, really living, each and every moment of life, Wilder is unapologetic about the points he wants to drive home. And perhaps because his ideas are so universally acceptable, it’s easy to accept Wilder’s moralizing. It also helps that the delivery of his messages is so emotionally poignant, as was effectively displayed during Friday night’s Our Town performance at Augustana College.
