Tom Vaccaro and Bret Churchill in A New BrainBeautiful vocalizations, rich harmonies, nuanced performances, and a fun, interesting set aside, what I enjoyed most about Saturday’s performance of the District Theatre’s A New Brain was that the musical felt both familiar and original; it's a fresh take on musical theatre, yet doesn't suggest any unnecessary effort made to reinvent the wheel. With its songs by William Finn and book by Finn and James Lapine, the piece manages to be odd, joyful, irreverent, and silly all at once, but also delivers an overarching sense of hope without being pandering or sugary.

Jessica Sheridan, Mike Schulz, and Thomas Alan Taylor in Private EyesWhat starts as a theatre audition quickly becomes something entirely different in the QC Theatre Workshop’s second production, Private Eyes. And this change from what’s real to what’s … well … something else is something I don’t want to fully describe, because such a shift happened several times – and at very unexpected moments – during Friday's performance, making the evening a bit of an intriguing thrill that repeatedly piqued my curiosity.

Rodney Swain, Brad Hauskins, Jennifer Diab, Andrea Moore, Sara Nicks, Bret Churchill, Jan Schmall, Marc Ciemiewicz, and Laura Hammes in The World Goes 'RoundThe fleet, funny noir opening to the Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse’s Bootlegger revue The World Goes ’Round is actually quite misleading, as it bears almost no resemblance to the show that follows. Yet rarely have I been so happy to be misled, because the show that follows is a real beauty – thoughtful and nuanced and serious, and oftentimes boasting a gravity and sadness that, coming from the Circa ’21 stage, feels legitimately shocking.

Jennifer Weingarten and Michael Karraker in All Shook UpGood God, is the Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse’s All Shook Up fun. The high energy on stage kicks into overdrive with the first song, “Jailhouse Rock,” and barely lets up as the cast sings, dances, and emotes its way through many of Elvis Presley’s hits. I was thrilled with the opening-night performance, and my lingering excitement has me still smiling as I write this the day after seeing the jukebox musical.

Don Denton, Bret Churchill, and Laura Miller in Jack Frost Saves ChristmasThe Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse’s Jack Frost Saves Christmas is the most adorable children’s play I’ve ever seen. Okay, it’s also the only children’s play I’ve seen since... well, since I was a child. Still, it brought out the kid in me as I danced and sang along – at the appropriate, invited times, of course – and I wasn’t alone; the children in attendance at Saturday’s performance, including the two I brought along with me, laughed and danced and shouted exclamations of delight at the play’s proceedings.
