Quad City Music Guild’s Cabaret is at its most entertaining whenever Bryan Tank’s Emcee graces the stage – “graces” being a somewhat incorrect term, as it's the actor’s unflinching commitment to his character’s blatantly sexual nature that’s so engaging. With his impressive German accent and convincing characterization of unabashed debauchery, Tank punctuates the beguilement of his Emcee by way of sexual gestures that seemed to titillate Thursday’s preview-performance audience, at least judging by the large amounts of laughter mixed with amused shock. (This was most notable during the threesome pelvic thrusts and other dance steps in Cabaret's “Two Ladies” number, one of several deliciously bawdy pieces choreographed by Emma Williams.)

The fleet, funny noir opening to the Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse’s Bootlegger revue The World Goes ’Round is actually quite misleading, as it bears almost no resemblance to the show that follows. Yet rarely have I been so happy to be misled, because the show that follows is a real beauty – thoughtful and nuanced and serious, and oftentimes boasting a gravity and sadness that, coming from the Circa ’21 stage, feels legitimately shocking.

LOVE & OTHER DRUGS
In my 2009 review of the director’s turgid World War II drama Defiance, I opened by asking, “Am I the only person who wishes that Edward Zwick would go back to making sharp, bitchy comedies like his 1986 Rob Lowe-Demi Moore romance About Last Night ... ?” Well, less than two years later, Zwick has returned to those romantic-comedy roots with Love & Other Drugs. Because, apparently, I needed another reminder to be careful what I wish for.

Watching the cast perform in the Timber Lake Playhouse's production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is like witnessing a mass exodus on the last day of the school year; the actors appear so excited about their newfound freedom that they can barely contain themselves.

In the 11-week period between June 1 and August 12, I saw 28 area productions. And how did you spend your summer vacation?
Considering the overall great time I had last summer, though, I was hardly dreading this relentless schedule. I'd spent 10 whole months eagerly anticipating my return to the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre (CAST), Mt. Carroll's Timber Lake Playhouse, and - for Genesius Guild productions - Rock Island's Lincoln Park; the summer-theatre triad would be responsible for 17 of those 28 offerings. (Summer 2006 would also provide my introduction to Eldridge's Countryside Community Players, whose Cinderella I missed last year.)
