Rebecca Ferguson and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Rogue NationMISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION

Before a recent screening, I saw one of those previews in which a Hollywood star welcomes you to your local Cinemark chain, and as soon as that star said, “Hi, I’m Tom Cruise,” a woman in the front row let out a loud, seemingly involuntary “Yech.” The preview, of course, was for Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and perhaps the best solace I can offer that woman is that while I frequently find Crusie yech-y, too, the movie itself is a lot of fun. It’s even more fun if you can forget that Cruise is starring in it. But, y’know ... good luck with that.

It has been widely reported that Ridley Scott’s war drama Black Hawk Down, originally due later this year, had its release bumped up to qualify for year-end awards consideration and, in theory, serve as a balm for a country forever damaged by the tragic events of September 11. There’s no reason to refute this, and there might even be a kind of self-serving nobility in Columbia Studios’ decision, yet the film in question is a technically impressive atrocity, one that’s perhaps even more heinous in light of last fall’s terrorist attacks. Although based on true events and Mark Bowden’s well-regarded book, Black Hawk Down is jingoistic, dramatically inert, and sometimes shockingly racist; expect nominations and awards to follow.

Will Smith and Matt Damon in The Legend of Bagger VanceTHE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE

The Legend of Bagger Vance, Robert Redford’s golfing fable, isn’t a work of any depth, and there’s precious little intelligence on display, but it sure looks pretty – so pretty, in fact, that audiences might not realize that the movie itself is a dud. From the golden-hued cinematography of the great Michael Ballhaus to the stunning, Depression-era costuming and production design, it’s clear that the film has been made with the utmost care and a real attention to physical and aural beauty; if you didn’t understand a word of English, you might find it a masterpiece.
