Richard Madden and Lily James in CinderellaCINDERELLA

Given its sumptuous production design and its array of multi-hued gowns so breathtaking that costumer Sandy Powell should just be sent her inevitable Oscar via express mail, Disney’s new, live-action Cinderella has to be the most opulent deeply unnecessary movie ever made. Somewhat unexpectedly, it’s also one of the more satisfying deeply unnecessary movies ever made. Director Kenneth Branagh’s fairytale adaptation, with its script by Chris Weitz, may have no reason to exist beyond the obvious mercenary one, but it’s strong and heartfelt and quite beautifully acted – proof that even in the revisionist age of Maleficent, it’s not always necessary to re-invent the wheel.

Steve TouVelle, Laila Haley, John Donald O’Shea, Ali Girsch, Gina Cox, Payton Wilson, Corey Delathower, Jane Driscoll, and Yvonne Siddique in Willy WonkaThe requisite imagination present in Quad City Music Guild’s production of Willy Wonka is provided in great part by Bill Marsoun's scenic design. He’s come up with some clever visuals to tell the tale of Charlie Bucket – portrayed as female here by Laila Haley – finding a golden ticket and joining four lucky, and bratty, children on a tour of Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

ensemble members in Davenport Junior Theatre's 20,000 Leagues Under the SeaFans of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – either the novel or 1954’s live-action Disney movie – should be excited to attend Davenport Junior Theatre’s debuting stage version of the adventure classic, running February 15 through 23. Just as long, says playwright Aaron Randolph III, as those 20,000 Leagues fans aren’t also 20,000 Leagues purists.

Ballet Quad Cities' CinderellaThere were two particular elements that made Ballet Quad Cities’ Cinderella (which ran for two Adler Theatre performances on April 20) especially watchable beyond Courtney Lyon’s exquisite choreography: clear storytelling, and humor. Not at one moment during Saturday evening’s performance did I find it hard to figure out which part of the fairytale was being depicted in dance, even down to the details of what specific characters were doing and feeling at all times.

Daniel Pepper in Singin' in the RainLeaving Friday’s Countryside Community Theatre performance of Singin' in the Rain, I overheard one woman say to another, “Well, that was a different take on it.” Actually, I would love to see a different take on this classic musical written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, with lyrics by Arthur Freed and music by Nacio Herb Brown. But director/choreographer Christina Myatt’s production is, instead, an homage to the original film with only-slightly-adjusted re-creations of Gene Kelly's original choreography, yet one boasting just enough beautiful, original touches to avoid direct mimicry of the movie.
