The Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse enjoys a luxury that no other theatrical venues in the area do: Its productions, on average, run about eight weeks each, allowing good shows plenty of time to eventually become very, very good shows. Given this, I’m guessing that the theatre’s latest offering, Pump Boys & Dinettes, will, by its closing night on September 17, end up … fine.

Circa ’21’s Winnie the Pooh at The Rocket through July 23

At the opening-day performance of Winnie the Pooh, the air was already so festive – their doors may be temporarily closed, but the Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse is still in business! – that the show was the recipient of enormous goodwill even before it began. Balloons decorated the street, the Rocket Theatre was alive with the noise of excited young uns, the parents seemed in surprisingly good moods … it was a pretty sweet sight. If you have as much fondness for Circa ’21 as I do – and I know some of you do, ’cause I’ve seen you there … – the atmosphere alone would have made Winnie the Pooh worthwhile.

The time: the present invaded by the past. The setting: sanctuaries in the southwest desert. The play: Altar Call. And the playwright: Melissa McBain, who has appropriated one of the country’s most volatile current debates – where the church stands on the subject of homosexuality – as her play’s subject.

So far as I know, there are no steadfast rules regarding children’s theatre, but two certain “don’t”s would have to be: (1) Don’t bore the kids, and (2) Don’t confuse the kids.
