Don Denton, Bret Churchill, and Laura Miller in Jack Frost Saves ChristmasThe Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse’s Jack Frost Saves Christmas is the most adorable children’s play I’ve ever seen. Okay, it’s also the only children’s play I’ve seen since... well, since I was a child. Still, it brought out the kid in me as I danced and sang along – at the appropriate, invited times, of course – and I wasn’t alone; the children in attendance at Saturday’s performance, including the two I brought along with me, laughed and danced and shouted exclamations of delight at the play’s proceedings.

Don Denton, Marty McNamee, Danny White, and Scott Stratton in Plaid TidingsI’ve never seen a production of Forever Plaid, but that didn’t seem to affect my enjoyment of the Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse’s production of the musical’s sequel, Plaid Tidings. Thanks to a quick recap of the events from its predecessor, it was immediately clear that this show would concern a 1950s vocal quartet that had died, but was sent back to Earth to perform a Christmas show in order to prove their Plaid-itude. Or something like that.

Heather Beck in A Closer Walk with Patsy ClineI can't imagine anyone who likes the music of Patsy Cline not liking the Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse's current offering, A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline. Personally, I don't much care for the mid-20th-Century country style of Cline's songs. However, I very much appreciated Friday night's performance for its staging and its remarkable singing, and therefore, enjoyed music I'd otherwise ignore were I to hear it on the radio.

Ben Holmes, Sara Nicks, Laura Miller, Andrea Moore, and Bret Churchill in 8-Track: The Sounds of the 70'sIt's hard to go wrong with a musical revue of 70's songs. Okay, actually a lot could go wrong: pitch problems, poor song selection, technical difficulties, weak performances. Fortunately, though, the Circa 21 Dinner Playhouse's 8-Track: The Sounds of the 70's suffered only a handful of pitch issues and a few missed microphone cues on Thursday's opening-night performance, and otherwise mirrored the fun of the decade's music.

Michael Phillips, Lisa Pilgrim, and Claira Hart in EcclesiazusaeGenesius Guild's Ecclesiazusae is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen on a local stage, and that's what I found so charming about it.
