Cody Jolly and Matt Webb in Greater TunaDuring Thursday’s performance of the Timber Lake Playhouse’s Greater Tuna, I enjoyed comparing and contrasting the comedic styles of cast members Matt Webb and Cody Jolly. Each comical in their own rights, Webb and Jolly are distinctly different in their portrayals of the residents of Tuna, Texas, in playwrights Jaston Williams’, Ed Howard’s, and Joe Sears’ two-person, 20-character play about a day spent in this small town.

Holly Moss and Rosie Upton in Peter PanThere’s magic in the Timber Lake Playhouse’s Peter Pan that reached my inner child and set him dancing. Even knowing that Rosie Upton’s title character would fly, I still got chills when scenic designer Benjamin Lipinski’s grand windows were flung open and the forever-young boy floated through them. And that thrill only took a break during the production's intermission, otherwise staying with me during its entire two hours.

John B. Leen in Les MiserablesIf the Timber Lake Playhouse’s production of Les Misérables is the only experience some theatre-goers will have with Alain Boublil’s and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s much-loved musical, I think that would be more than okay. Director Matthew Teague Miller and his cast and crew not only do justice to the material, but present it in a memorable way that, for me, actually improves on the long-running Broadway version. This is an exceptional production, boasting fantastic performances and exquisite imagery.

Rumors ensemble members

The cast of the Timber Lake Playhouse’s Rumors does its best to squeeze out every bit of humor from playwright Neil Simon’s clichéd farce. Some of the actors are wildly successful, eliciting laughter beyond what Simon's script deserves. Others at least have their moments in this play about eight anniversary-party guests trying to figure out why their host (who is never seen) shot himself in the earlobe, and why his wife isn't home for the gathering.

Matthew Webb, Lexie Plath, Analisha Santini, Blake W. Price, and Cody Jolly in Young FrankensteinThe Timber Lake Playhouse’s Young Frankenstein is a polished, professional production featuring stellar performances by the lead actors and impressive energy from the ensemble. Playwright/composer Mel Brooks’ material – with its book by Thomas Meehan – is well-served by this group of talented performers, dynamic lighting effects by designer James Kolditz, inventive choreography by Cameron Turner, and adeptly paced humor by director Brad Lyons. After seeing my first production at this much-lauded theatre in Mt. Carroll, I left impressed.
