Into the WoodsThe scenic design for the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre’s Into the Woods is deceptively simple – basically a half-dozen white drop curtains hanging ceiling to floor, with a few stone steps decorating the otherwise bare stage. But don’t be fooled: Like a rabbit being pulled from a hat, something truly magical emerges from this production’s minimalist-by-necessity façade.

Little Shop of HorrorsThe Clinton Area Showboat Theatre’s Little Shop of Horrors kicks off with the promise of a lot of fun. The opening, titular doo-wop number is full of spirit (aided by choreographer Brian Cowing’s homage to ’50s-era backup singers) and is well sung by the trio of street urchins – played by Monique Abry, Heather Botts, and Nyla Watson – who showcase impressive solo belt voices and tight harmonies. With my head bopping and my lips longing to sing along, I believed I was in for a raucous good time during Friday’s performance. However, the Showboat’s production wilts as the carnivorous plant at the center of the action grows.

Nicole Ferguson and Brian Cowing in High FidelityThere is so much energy in the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre’s High Fidelity that I practically had to hold myself down in my seat throughout Thursday night’s performance to avoid jumping up and dancing along with the actors. Not only are the book by David Lindsay-Abaire, lyrics by Amanda Green, and music by Tom Kitt great fun, but director Patrick Stinson and his cast seem to have a rocking good time staging it.

If not for Patrick Stinson’s direction and the cast’s performances (Cole Rauch’s and Tanya Smith’s in particular) adding an effectively creepy air, the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre’s Dracula would be a rather dull affair. Playwright Crane Johnson, it seems, would much rather describe vampiric events in his script than write so that anyone directing the play might show them. It’s not nearly as frightening, after all, to hear someone tell of bodies found or women bitten in the neck as it is to see these events happen before your very eyes.

Sarah Stephan and Noah Strausser in The Best Christmas Pageant EverThe Best Christmas Pageant Ever, the one-act play Barbara Robinson adapted from her beloved book, is set primarily in a church that stages a grade-school re-telling of the Nativity story - the exact same pageant, we're told, that the church puts on year after year after year. And after attending Friday night's hilarious, intensely charming production of Robinson's show, I, for one, would be totally on board with the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre opting to stage The Best Christmas Pageant Ever year after year after year, at least if director Jalayne Riewerts wouldn't mind making it an annual commitment.
