The Irish accents are so good in New Ground Theatre’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane that, during Friday night’s performance, it actually took me a while to understand the actors – particularly Susan Perrin-Sallak and Melissa Anderson Clark, who play the mother and daughter at the center of the play. It took me about as long to also understand the reason playwright Martin McDonagh’s work has won so many awards, as I found the story a bit slow and dull at first, though it gradually built to a punch that I didn’t see coming despite (as I recognized in hindsight) it being clearly foreshadowed.

Countryside Community Theatre has plenty to be proud of with its current production of The King & I – the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical about a British schoolteacher who moves to Siam in 1862 to teach the king’s many children – as Friday’s performance hit all the right notes anyone might expect from this classic. There’s enough familiarity in director David Turley's outing to remind audiences of the film or similarly staged productions, but also more-than-enough fresh takes on the characters to make this production Countryside’s own. And underlying all this is a true cheeriness that extends from the cast to the audience. Despite the show's moments of anger and sadness, I was brimming with joy and full of smiles when I left the theatre.

Local audiences have seen married actors Jonathan and Rochelle Schrader appearing opposite one another numerous times over the years: in Opera@Augustana's The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado; in the former Green Room Theatre’s Into the Woods; and in Quad City Music Guild’s Babes in Toyland.
But with Countryside Community Theatre’s presentation of The King & I, running June 22 through 30 at Eldridge’s North Scott High School, patrons will see the Schraders interact in a way that, on-stage at least, they never have before.
“This is the first time we’ve actually gotten to play semi-romantically together,” says Jonathan, who enacts the titular, short-tempered King of Siam – a role made legendary by Yul Brynner – opposite his wife’s stalwart schoolteacher Anna. “I’ve played her father several times, and I tried to kill her in Babes in Toyland, but ... .”

At the start of the intermission to Friday night’s District Theatre performance of Company, my partner turned to me and said, “I don’t remember this show being that funny.” He was right, because director David Turley accentuates the funny parts in this musical by composer Stephen Sondheim and writer George Furth. He does so, however, with subtle nudges and winks that almost cross over into silliness but don't, and that keep the production from sinking into sappy sentimentality.

While I like David Turley’s work as a director – with this year’s Chicago at the District Theatre and Gypsy with Countryside Community Theatre among his most notable efforts – I’d like to see more of him on-stage. I was wowed by his John Hinckley Jr. in 2008’s Assassins at the Green Room Theatre, tickled pink by his William Barfee in 2010’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at the Harrison Hilltop Theatre, and amusingly intrigued by his Vladimir in that venue’s 2010 Waiting for Godot.
