Hugh Jackman and Levi Miller in PanPAN

Not long into director Joe Wright's origin fable Pan, the 12-year-old Peter (Levi Miller), newly captured by pirates descending from bungee cords, surveys the World War II fighter planes striking his kidnappers' airborne pirate ship and shouts, “Oh, come on!” Roughly an hour later, in the midst of another aerial attack, Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund) – a heroic American boasting Indiana Jones' wardrobe and two functional hands – gazes at the melee involving enormous CGI birds of prey and shouts, “Oh, come on!” What does it say about a movie when even its leads can't believe in the on-screen nonsense?

Since Universal Pictures’ fizzy, funny animated hit Despicable Me was released a mere four months ago, it’s hardly possible that DreamWorks’ new Megamind could be considered an intentional ripoff, despite a plot that also finds an über-villain gradually morphing into an über-hero. And despite the film’s haughty, antagonistic protagonist performing his evil deeds alongside a goofy, tag-along minion. And despite this blobby little homunculus being named Minion. (Seriously, are there no fresh ideas in Hollywood?)

Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

I know a bunch of you bought tickets for it this past weekend, so allow me to ask: Did anyone else find Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest a little, you know, incoherent? A degree of senselessness, of course, has to come with the territory, but while I'm positive that I didn't nod off during Gore Verbinski's opus - the booming soundtrack and relentless, CGI-enhanced action won't let you - I'm not sure I ever quite understood it. There seemed to be a whole lot of plot in Dead Man's Chest but none of it meant anything or was revealed with an urgency that might make it mean anything; at some point, I simply gave up trying to figure the damned thing out, and just waited for Davy Jones and the rest of his barnacled baddies to show up again.
