Rumors ensemble members

The cast of the Timber Lake Playhouse’s Rumors does its best to squeeze out every bit of humor from playwright Neil Simon’s clichéd farce. Some of the actors are wildly successful, eliciting laughter beyond what Simon's script deserves. Others at least have their moments in this play about eight anniversary-party guests trying to figure out why their host (who is never seen) shot himself in the earlobe, and why his wife isn't home for the gathering.

Brandon Jess Ford, Dryden Meints, and Hanah Nardone in Boeing-BoeingEven if you entered the Timber Lake Playhouse’s Boeing-Boeing unaware that author Marc Camoletti’s play was a farcical comedy – its elbow-in-the-ribs title somehow not divulging that information – all it would take is one look at Nathan Dahlkemper’s scenic design to know that some serious slapstick was bound to be in store.

(clockwise from left) Melissa Anderson Clark, Jonathan Grafft, Jason Platt, and Jackie Madunic in God of CarnageNew Ground Theatre’s God of Carnage is one of the funniest shows, if not the funniest, I’ve seen on a Quad Cities stage so far this year. Not only is the script by playwright Yasmina Reza sharp, surprising, and witty, but director Derek Bertelsen’s handling of the pacing and his cast’s character choices had me laughing embarrassingly loudly at Thursday’s performance. Even two days later, I find myself mentally inserting quotable dialogue from the play into conversations (though I’d rather not quote any of it here, as most of the best lines involve the “F” word).

Commie Dearest: "Red Herring," at the Timber Lake Playhouse through July 24

Katie Wesler and Andrew Harth in Red HerringWhen attending a detective spoof with the title Red Herring, you probably shouldn’t expect its storyline(s) to hold together in a way that makes much sense, and Michael Hollinger’s farcical noir seems particularly all-over-the-map; somehow, in 130 minutes, the play’s author squeezes in adultery, bigamy, murder, treason, neutron-bomb testing, the McCarthy hearings, a show-tune-loving Soviet, and a top-secret microfilm stashed in a block of Velveeta.
