James Driscoll and Sara Laufer in A 1940s Radio Christmas CarolThere are some delightful moments in Quad City Music Guild’s holiday production A 1940s Radio Christmas Carol, including composer David Wohl’s fantastic arrangements of classic carols, and inspired performances by some of the cast members portraying radio actors. When neither of these elements are present, there’s also scenic designer Harold Truitt’s layered, multi-level set with a plethora of pleasing décor, as well as costume designer Heidi Pedersen’s impeccably-tailored period ensembles. It also boasts the fun of watching several local acting dynamos share the stage together.

Oklahoma!'s Jen Sondgeroth and David M. MillerIf you’re planning to see Quad City Music Guild’s Oklahoma!, I’d recommend getting to the theatre at least 10 minutes before the presentation begins. Those buying – or hoping to buy – tickets at the door should certainly arrive earlier than that; Friday’s opening-night performance was already nearly sold out, and I imagine word-of-mouth will make the musical’s second weekend equally jam-packed. But 10 minutes seems like an appropriate amount of time to take in this production’s absolute beauty of a set, and besides, you might find yourself forgetting about the set once the cast shows up and gives you even more wonderful things to look at.

Mike Millar and Charlene Engstrom in Hello, Dolly!Quad City Music Guild's Hello, Dolly! seems something of a self-parody, as director Erin Lounsberry amps up the silliness of the piece, reveling in the fun of it rather than taking this story of the matchless matchmaker too seriously. It's Lounsberry's almost campy approach that makes the production worth seeing, with Tristan Layne Tapscott and Bryan Tank carrying much of its wacky weight.

Erika Thomas, Susan Granet, Christopher Thomas, and Spencer Clark in The Music ManChristopher Thomas could sell me anything. On Thursday night, he was peddling the character of Harold Hill in a preview performance of Quad City Music Guild’s The Music Man, and Thomas plays the part with such bombastic charm – and just a hint of smarm – that despite knowing of the character’s swindling intentions, I was buying his Hill’s shtick hook, line, and sinker, right along with the good people of River City.

Erika and Christopher Thomas in The Music ManQuad City Music Guild’s new production of The Music Man – the Meredith Willson classic running August 5 through 14 – stars husband and wife Christopher and Erika Thomas as romantic leads Harold Hill and Marian Paroo. And just to be clear: Yes, the couple knows how close to nauseatingly adorable it is for them to be playing these roles opposite one another.

“I’m kind of calling this my nursing-home story,” says Erika with a laugh. “Like when our grandchildren come to visit, it’ll be, ‘You know, your grandfather and I were in Music Man once ... !’”

“And they’ll be, ‘Uh oh ... here comes that Music Man story again ... !’” counters Christopher, also laughing.
