Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in The Lone RangerTHE LONE RANGER

Youll have to wait more than two hours for it, but in director Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger, you’ll finally be treated to a scene that makes sitting through this hugely budgeted action-adventure-Western-comedy totally worth your ... .

Oh, who am I kidding? The movie still isn’t worth your time. But as the scene in question is the only truly exhilarating one in the whole of this wildly over-produced and exhaustingly frenetic outing – an updating of the beloved radio and television serial that famously asked, “Who was that masked man?” – I might as well give it the praise it deserves.

Isabelle Allen and Hugh Jackman in Les MiserablesLES MISÉRABLES

Director Tom Hooper’s take on the über-beloved musical Les Misérables is, in numerous regards, a maddeningly weak stage-to-screen transfer. Scenes have been bluntly presented with no discernible invention or style. The incessant employment of closeups creates stagnancy in sequences and numbers that beg for breathing room. The movie’s two most prominent actors are cast in roles for which they can’t nearly do vocal justice. And, so help me, I ravenously gobbled up every last, unsubtle, frequently disappointing morsel of the thing.

BraveBRAVE

Like many of you, I’d imagine, I applaud Pixar for finally giving audiences a strong female protagonist in Brave, and would’ve looked forward to the movie itself more had the trailers not been so resoundingly blah. But what I’d forgotten was that several of the animation studio’s best outings – Finding Nemo, WALL•E, Toy Story 3 – were also promoted with weak previews, and so it’s a pleasure to say that this Scotland-based adventure is one of Pixar’s most involving and interesting achievements in years, partly because those generically jokey trailers give you almost no idea of what’s actually in store.

Johnny Depp in Dark ShadowsDARK SHADOWS

Dark Shadows, director Tim Burton’s take on the 1966-71 gothic soap opera that remains a cult favorite, is gently satirical and totally watchable, and filled with inventive fringe touches. Led by Johnny Depp, its cast features a bunch of terrific comedians – a number of whom don’t often get the chance to be comedians – and the visuals are thoroughly impressive. All told, it’s probably Burton’s best film, and certainly his best live-action film, in more than a decade. So why, in the end, doesn’t all of that mean more than it actually does?

Daniel Radcliffe and Ralph Fiennes in Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 2HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2

As the end credits began rolling at my screening of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the (need I say it?) final installment in the film series adapted from J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels, I’ll admit that I anticipated more applause than I actually heard. Then again, it’s awfully hard to clap while simultaneously wiping tears from your cheeks.
