As you’re probably aware, director Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games is the movie version of the first in a trio of wildly popular young-adult novels by author Suzanne Collins. And perhaps the highest compliment I can pay the film, among the many compliments it deserves, is that unlike with the Harry Potter and Twilight screen adaptations, at no point are viewers such as myself punished for being too blasé or lazy to have read the book.

If you will, please permit me a quick public apology before I expound on my 10 favorite movies of this past year:
Sorry, Muppets. If I hadn’t caught that out-of-town flick a week ago, you totally would’ve made the list. (Instead, you top the list of the 150 other 2011 movies I saw.)

HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2
As the end credits began rolling at my screening of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the (need I say it?) final installment in the film series adapted from J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels, I’ll admit that I anticipated more applause than I actually heard. Then again, it’s awfully hard to clap while simultaneously wiping tears from your cheeks.

HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART I
About two-thirds of the way through Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part I, Rupert Grint’s Ron Weasley finally has it out with Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger and Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry. Fed up with the apparent hopelessness of their latest quest, and more than a bit peeved about his eternal status as Harry’s second banana, Ron angrily asserts that the three wizards-in-training aren’t finding anything and aren’t getting anywhere, and eventually storms off in a huff. Never in my life have I felt so connected to Rupert Grint.

PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF
Just because the title is rather unwieldy, and the film is about an adolescent with otherworldly abilities, and this kid has male and female tag-along pals with powers of their own, and there are a lot of CGI effects on display, and the director is Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets helmer Chris Columbus, don't think that Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is necessarily indebted to J.K. Rowling. The latest Harry Potter movie, after all, found its hero contending with a Half-Blood Prince. This adventure, on the other hand, finds its son-of-Poseidon protagonist attending Camp Half-Blood. See? They're not even remotely similar.
