Jim Strauss, Jan Golz, and Stacy McKean Herrick in Love Thy NeighborThe sharp wit of playwright Gary Ray Stapp’s dialogue goes a long way to overcome the occasional humorless spots in the Richmond Hill Barn Theatre's production of Love Thy Neighbor. And when the cast is delivering Stapp’s most amusing banter, director Eugenia Giebel’s presentation titillates sometimes to the point of tears, particularly as Jan Golz’s self-important, riff-raff-hating busybody Leona Crump squares off against Diane Greenwood’s dolled-up, somewhat pompous Tupperware and Avon saleswoman Ava. The two create sparks of entertaining disdain for each other, and best suggest the overall tone Stapp apparently intended for his play.

Joshua Kahn, Jordan Smith, and Cayte McClanathan in Ghost of a ChanceI could’ve left Saturday’s Playcrafters Barn Theatre production of Ghost of a Chance at intermission and been quite pleased with the evening’s entertainment. Unfortunately, I exited after the night's second act frustrated almost to the point of anger – not at director Patti Flaherty or her cast, but at the show's playwrights Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus.

Jan Golz, Lisa Kahn, and Pamela Crouch in The O'Conner GirlsIf there's one word I'd use to best describe Playcrafters Barn Theatre's current production, it would be "nice." And while that can be taken as an unflattering adjective, for The O'Conner Girls I mean it as a positive one; I left the opening-night performance with a smile on my face, one awash with the sweet nostalgia and dash of humor that put it there.

Here's to You, Mrs. Robinson: "The Graduate," at the Harrison Hilltop Theatre through May 17

James Bleecker and Erin Lounsberry in The GraduateThe Harrison Hilltop Theatre's The Graduate provides a respectable amount of fun, considering that almost nothing in it makes the least bit of sense. Adapted from Charles Webb's 1963 novel and/or Mike Nichols' seminal 1967 comedy, Terry Johnson's script frequently feels like the movie version on fast-forward - the playwright clumsily barrels through both the narrative and its complex emotional transitions - and the show's tone and performance styles are all over the map. Yet considering its frequently awkward and unconvincing elements, director Wayne Hess' comedy does at least offer one truly magical ingredient in Erin Lounsberry, whose performance here is insinuating, disturbing, sexy, and richly, deeply funny.

Susan Philhower, Renaud Haymon, and Jan Golz Truth be told, I'm rather envious of the audiences who'll be seeing Light Up the Sky during its second weekend at the Richmond Hill Barn Theatre, because while I had a mostly terrific time at Friday night's production, I'm guessing that subsequent crowds will have an even better one.
