Doug Kutzli in A Christmas CarolOn Saturday evening, I was reminded of the local treasure that is the District Theatre’s A Christmas Carol. Written by Tristan Layne Tapscott with music by Danny White, this holiday musical is something special: a locally created piece so good that it could, and should, be staged by theatres throughout the country. And this year – the second the theatre has produced the show – brings some notable changes from last winter's staging of this theatrical gem.

Doug Kutzli and Linda Ruebling in A Christmas CarolI had high expectations for the District Theatre’s musical version of A Christmas Carol, given my knowledge of Tristan Layne Tapscott’s and Danny White’s talents. But Tapscott’s book and White’s music and lyrics actually exceeded my expectations during Friday’s world-premiere performance, as the two have conceived a musical that I can see being produced by theatres across the country without requiring workshops and major rewrites. While their piece could still use some minor refinement, their version of the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge is remarkable for Tapscott's handling of the narrative, and White’s cleverly crafted lyrics and gorgeous instrumentation.

Jonathan Schrader (top) and the king's children in The King & ICountryside Community Theatre has plenty to be proud of with its current production of The King & I – the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical about a British schoolteacher who moves to Siam in 1862 to teach the king’s many children – as Friday’s performance hit all the right notes anyone might expect from this classic. There’s enough familiarity in director David Turley's outing to remind audiences of the film or similarly staged productions, but also more-than-enough fresh takes on the characters to make this production Countryside’s own. And underlying all this is a true cheeriness that extends from the cast to the audience. Despite the show's moments of anger and sadness, I was brimming with joy and full of smiles when I left the theatre.
