Brad Hauskins, Tom Walljasper, Rachelle Walljasper, Lora Adams, Andrew Crowe, and Jody Alan Lee in Southern CrossroadsWith its charm, high spirits, optimism, and infectiously fun tunes selected and arranged by Steve Przybylski, there’s a wonderful specialness to playwright Warner Crocker’s Southern Crossroads. And in the Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse's current production of the show, what's particularly special about what is already a good musical has a lot to do with director Curt Wollan’s cast members, who have an apparent love for the material and exude a palpable enjoyment in their performance of it. This piece transcends traditional musical theatre in a way that’s all too rare, pulling in its audience through a spell of song and hope.

Sing It, Scrooge!: "A Christmas Carol," at the District Theatre through December 23

Doug Kutzli and Linda Ruebling in A Christmas CarolI had high expectations for the District Theatre’s musical version of A Christmas Carol, given my knowledge of Tristan Layne Tapscott’s and Danny White’s talents. But Tapscott’s book and White’s music and lyrics actually exceeded my expectations during Friday’s world-premiere performance, as the two have conceived a musical that I can see being produced by theatres across the country without requiring workshops and major rewrites. While their piece could still use some minor refinement, their version of the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge is remarkable for Tapscott's handling of the narrative, and White’s cleverly crafted lyrics and gorgeous instrumentation.

Carrie SaLoutos, Rachelle Walljasper, Serena Vesper, Autumn O'Ryan, and Lora Adams in The Dixie Swim ClubGiven its “sorority” sort of feel, the Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse’s The Dixie Swim Club – which concerns the annual, beach-cabin gatherings of five former members of a college swim team – will likely appeal to the women in the audience. However, not being a woman myself, I can also say that I quite enjoyed Friday’s performance of the show for the chemistry between the actors, the stunning set, and the humor that playwrights Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten put into their comedy.

Money Makes the Worms Come Around: "Spreading It Around," at the Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse through June 9

Lora Adams in Spreading It AroundBrad Hauskins elicited the largest laughs during Friday’s performance of Spreading It Around at the Circa '21 Dinner Playhouse, starting with the moment he first walked onstage with his frozen-hip shuffle. His psychologist character Dr. Ward doesn’t actually appear until the middle of the second act of this comedy, which concerns the efforts of the widow Angie to share her wealth (and that of her fellow retirees) with those in need, rather than leaving it to their ungrateful children. But with little stage time, Hauskins squeezes out every ounce of comic possibility from his role, relishing his awkward pauses, and dryly delivering his lines with the slightly high-pitched, mildly shaky voice stereotypical of the elder person he's portraying.

Give ’em the Slips: “Nana’s Naughty Knickers,” at the Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse through September 24

Nancy Evans, Adelina Feldman-Schultz, and Sherry Konjura in Nana's Naughty KnickersFor what it is, the Circa ’21 Dinner Playhouse’s Nana’s Naughty Knickers is rather amusing and somewhat unexpected. The title, for me, conjures up images of scantily clad grannies telling off-color, elderly-themed jokes in a wild farce. Instead, playwright Katherine DiSavino’s piece is a mild farce, with a unique plot and interesting, likable characters (and only a handful of age-based jokes). I didn’t laugh quite as much as I expected to during Friday’s opening-night performance, but I was more engaged than I anticipated I would be, and interested in where DiSavino would take her characters.
