Cara Chumbley, Lora Adams, Brad Hauskins, and Rachelle Walljasper in Things My Mother Taught MeAnother year of area stage productions has come and gone, and wanting to try something different this December, Reader theatre reviewer Thom White and I thought we’d bypass our traditional, end-of-year postmortem in favor of an alternate approach: requesting 100-words-or-fewer submissions from our readers on what people found particularly memorable about the 2013 stage scene. “It’ll be something new!” we thought. “It’ll be exciting! It’ll be filled with fresh voices that aren’t ours!” And, I must admit, we were dazzled with the overall response.

Well, “dazzled” may be overstating it.

Hmmm ... what’s the word I’m looking for ... ?

“Mortified,” maybe ... ?

Calvin Vo and Bryan Woods in The AcharniansThis year’s end-of-season Greek comedy by Genesius Guild, The Acharnians, is high on political humor, musical numbers, and sharply funny barbs at the expense of local organizations – especially Genesis Health System and Trinity Regional Health System (now UnityPoint Health) – and the cities of Moline, Davenport, and Rock Island. Michael Phillips, Lisa Pilgrim, and Claira Hart in EcclesiazusaeGenesius Guild's Ecclesiazusae is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen on a local stage, and that's what I found so charming about it.

"The Birds" ensemble members Oh man, how I'm going to miss Don Wooten.

The Genesius Guild founder, who will be retiring from active Guild duties after this, his 50th season with the organization, kicked off Saturday night's production of Aristophanes' The Birds with a few opening remarks to the Lincoln Park audience, and as is often the case, they were the most sincere, relaxed, and effortlessly amusing words heard all night. (Wooten also serves as The Birds' director and, uncredited, wrote its faithful but very loosely structured Genesius adaptation.)
