NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS
National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the follow-up to 2004's globe-trotting-archaeologist adventure, could generously be termed "perfunctory"; it gives (family) audiences exactly the formulaic, Indiana Jones-lite action, romance, and humor they adored in the original. It could also, less generously, be described as "crummy," as returning director Jon Turteltaub ensures that every remedially staged sequence has the same bland, going-through-the-motions tone as the one that came before. (At least its predecessor provided a few jokes.)

MADAGASCAR
See enough movies, especially ones geared to the younger set, and you all but stop expecting to be surprised by the arc of the plot; our heroes will learn valuable Life Lessons, generally while embarking on A Perilous Journey, good will triumph over evil, the comforts of home, family, and friends will prove more beguiling than any possible adventure, yada yada yada. The joy – the shock – of the new computer-animated comedy Madagascar is that, from scene to scene, you might find yourself having no clue where events will lead, yet you’re laughing too hard to pay the matter much mind.

When it was announced that the Brew & View’s Devin Hansen, this spring, would open a similar theater, The Rocket, in the District of Rock Island’s long-defunct Capri Cinema, the reaction of Brew & View regulars was generally twofold: an emphatic “Hooray!” followed by a quick “Huh?” After all, the Capri stands not four blocks from the Brew & View, and one such venue in the District was already more than film fans should have hoped for.
