"Noises Off," Ghostlight Is On

As the adage goes, “Dying is easy; comedy is hard.” Noises Off sure is. Saying that Michael Frayn’s farce requires precision is like saying a fish requires water or Jennifer Lopez requires publicity; the show’s very survival rests on the hairbreadth timing of its repartee and comic business. Frayn’s work is so tightly structured and its momentum so dizzying that the slightest inappropriate pause can completely knock you out of the show’s rhythm, and so I applaud Ghostlight Theatre for not only for tackling the script but often triumphing with it. Dying is easy, comedy is hard, and Noises Off is freakin’ hard.

New Ground’s "Talley’s Folly" a Quirky, Incomparable Love Story

New Ground is one of my favorite local theatre groups because it doesn’t settle for slapstick comedies, cliché-filled scripts, or sappy dramas. Instead, the not-for-profit organization with the mission to “bring the best in contemporary and original theatre to the Quad Cities” does superb work living up to that goal. New Ground’s upcoming show, Talley’s Folly, the recipient of the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for drama, is certainly no exception to the “best theatre” rule and is perhaps one of the most unconventional, intriguing love stories I’ve ever seen on stage. The production opens August 26 and runs through September 5 at Rivermont Collegiate in Bettendorf.

For 43 years, Don Wooten has been re-writing Greek history. His history lessons are anything but serious or classroom-worthy, and that’s all right with him. Wooten, the founder of Genesius Guild theatre group, has most recently altered the more outdated sections of Aristophanes’ comedy Plutus to make its already-quirky script even quirkier and more accessible to modern audiences. Wooten has added musical numbers and touches of local humor about bridge construction and the Mallards hockey team, and he addresses national issues such as war, education, President Bush, and television infomercials. With a bit of assistance from Aristophanes, Wooten has produced an appealing script.
