Liz Paxton and Matt Moody in The Trouble with CatsThe trouble with the Playcrafters Barn Theatre’s The Trouble with Cats is that Patti Flaherty is not featured enough during its two-and-a-half-hour length. Playing a dry, crass, flirtatious lowbrow named Joy Bombay, Flaherty proves it’s possible to present bad material in a way that’s enjoyable to watch, and when I laughed during Friday’s performance, it was usually due to Flaherty’s comedically nuanced deliveries or comically condescending or cruel facial expressions and body language. The actor is clearly gifted when it comes to comedy.

Angela Rathman in Altar CallWhile the story would benefit from more attention to how and when plot points should unfold, and some of the dialogue would benefit from a greater awareness of how people actually speak, I quite liked the themes that author Melissa McBain explores in Altar Call.

Diane Emmert and Jeremy Mahr in The Rover; photo by Shared Light Photography's Jessica SheridanJeremy Mahr seems to be dancing with his dialogue as Willmore, the titular character in the Prenzie Players’ The Rover. Author Aphra Behn’s words trip the light fantastic off his tongue, with Mahr presenting his rakish playboy so playfully that it's as though he’s fluent in the stylized, 17th Century language of the period. And when the meaning of what he’s saying is expressed through his entire body – particularly during Willmore's more amorous lines – the obviously fully invested Mahr is incredibly fun to watch.

Alex Richardson and Stephanie Moeller in MovingThere’s a lovely sincerity to the Playcrafters Barn Theatre’s production of Bernard Slade’s Moving, and Saturday’s performance possessed such realism – with notable acting from every member of director Bryan Woods' cast – that I had to wonder how such an impressively produced piece could feel so mismatched with its script.

Kelly Lohrenz and Tristan Tapscott in The Gift of the MagiThe Gift of the Magi is my favorite holiday tale. While the surprise is lost whenever I read it again, I still remember the goosebumps I felt when I first discovered O. Henry’s story of a man and woman making significant personal sacrifices in order to buy each other Christmas gifts. And while New Ground Theatre’s production of the musical version of this classic narrative did not give me the same delightful chills, it did leave me with a warm feeling of holiday joy.
