“It’s a shame it all has to end,” says our heroine, Lotty (Karrie McLaughlin), at the end of Playcrafters’ Enchanted April. I completely agreed. The production currently running at Moline’s Barn Theatre is unexpected in the best way possible: Who knew this light, frothy, harmless little romp could be this intoxicating?

In 1979, Patti Flaherty starred in Born Yesterday at Playcrafters Barn Theatre in Moline. Unfortunately, I hadn’t yet made my earthly appearance and was unable to review it. But 35 years later, she’s given me the chance by directing the current production of Yesterday on the same stage. The play is fast-paced if easily foretold, the characters are memorable, and the acting is superb.

Witches, Murder, and Gold Shoes: Genesius Guild’s "Macbeth"

In this weather, I pity the actors in Genesius Guild’s production of Macbeth. In addition to the fact they’re on stage wearing three layers of clothing and toting swords, shows are performed at Rock Island’s Lincoln Park outdoor theatre, which draws little breeze, lots of bugs, and, of course, heat. Though these aren’t ideal conditions for actors, or for audience members, people willing to brave the heat for three hours and put on the bug spray will be more than pleased to see an incredibly well-done yet traditional version of one of Shakespeare’s great tragedies.
