Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl in RushRUSH

While experiencing the technical craftsmanship of director Ron Howard’s Rush, with Slumdog Millionaire cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle working at peak ability and the sound effects and editing exquisite throughout, I was frequently tempted to say, “Wow.” Too bad that the film’s overall presentation more often had me asking, “Why?”

Kevin Grastorf and Paul Workman in Frost/NixonSitting down for Thursday’s performance of Frost/Nixon, the set for the Harrison Hilltop Theatre’s production heightened my concerns that I would likely be bored during the show. Even before arriving at the theatre, I anticipated struggling to concentrate, knowing I’m not much interested in history. But adding the minimalist approach to the set, with three platforms embellished by a strip of black rising up their centers, my hopes that the visuals, at least, would offer some interest dwindled. (While the look of the set is creative, I’m just not into minimalism.) It didn’t take long, though, for director Tristan Layne Tapscott’s efforts to prove my worries unwarranted, and by the end of the play, I was actually thankful for the simple set, as it didn’t at all distract from the players’ performances.

Cecile de France and Matt Damon in HereafterHEREAFTER

It’s been a couple of days since I’ve seen it, and I still find myself unable to explain to friends why I enjoyed Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter as much as I did. I wonder if that has anything to do with the movie being an almost complete mess.

Michael Sheen and Frank Langella in Frost/NixonFROST/NIXON

Ron Howard's adaptation of playwright Peter Morgan's Frost/Nixon has been nominated for five Academy Awards, and in Variety magazine, Morgan reacted to its success by saying, "The film is political but entertaining, and the credit goes to Ron. He takes the experience the audience has at the cinema very seriously." That's why I love Howard, and also why, as a director, he drives me absolutely crazy.

Will Ferrell in Semi-ProSEMI-PRO

In the '70s-era sports comedy Semi-Pro, Will Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one-hit-wonder pop star who becomes the owner of the American Basketball Association's Flint Tropics, a struggling Michigan team for which he also serves as coach, promoter, and star player. And forgive me for asking, but shouldn't any one of these five roles have been enough for Will Ferrell?
