Kristin Skaggs and J.C. Luxton in Antony & CleopatraMuch of Friday’s performance of the Prenzie Players’ Antony & Cleopatra played almost like a romantic comedy. Director Kate Farence’s staging of William Shakespeare’s tragedy feels lighter and funnier than perhaps the material calls for, with the titular couple enjoying their post-Julius Caesar relationship – and ultimately dealing with Rome’s political power plays and battles – amidst a den of hedonism, with hippie-esque attendants engaging in swinging orgies and drug use. Matt Moody’s set design even has the lovers reclining on a tiered platform covered in colorful pillows and blankets, a seeming nod to the pair’s interest in each other over the power of a throne. And the personality in Farence’s production proves titillating – and should make the show more palatable for those who might not enjoy a stuffier version.

Matt Moody and Michael Carron in Things Being What They AreThe beauty of New Ground Theatre’s comedy Things Being What They Are lies in how our hearts gradually soften for Michael Carron’s crotchety, imposing Jack, a rudely forward character who pushes his presence onto his neighbor Bill (Matt Moody), and whom playwright Wendy MacLeod uses to explore themes of marriage and mortality.

John Turner in Caesar, photo by Aimee FordThe Prenzie Players' Caesar, the company's truncated title for William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, has a playfulness about it, as director Tracy Skaggs reduces the Roman leader, played here by John Turner, to the role of celebrity. This consequently provides moments of humor and fun where there might otherwise be none, the highlight of which is J.C. Luxton’s Antony grabbing patrons from out of the audience and stating “Caesar grants your wish – rise,” before using his cell phone to snap pictures of the attendees with Caesar.

Kitty Israel in Doctor FaustusThere were moments during Friday’s performance of the Prenzie Players’ Doctor Faustus in which I was creeped out, but with a fascination that had me begging for more. Director Jake Walker, sound designer Elizabeth Spoerl, and lighting designer Tyson Danner create effectively ominous scenes, particularly those involving chanting or whispering from behind the black curtains surrounding the audience, or red light pouring forth from an opening in that cloth wall. Chills ran up my spine, goosebumps rose along my legs and arms, and the hair on the back of my neck stood up multiple times – all signs of a thrilling production.
