Nate Karstens, Abbey Donohoe, and Ian Sodawasser in Young FrankensteinOn at least three occasions during Thursday’s preview performance, Quad City Music Guild’s Young Frankenstein achieved a transcendent silliness – the kind you get with stunning regularity in Mel Brooks’ film-spoof inspiration. If you include everything said and done by Nate Karstens’ hunchback Igor, it was more like 203 occasions, but in the spirit of this tasty musical confection, let’s save the sweetest for dessert.

Steve TouVelle, Laila Haley, John Donald O’Shea, Ali Girsch, Gina Cox, Payton Wilson, Corey Delathower, Jane Driscoll, and Yvonne Siddique in Willy WonkaThe requisite imagination present in Quad City Music Guild’s production of Willy Wonka is provided in great part by Bill Marsoun's scenic design. He’s come up with some clever visuals to tell the tale of Charlie Bucket – portrayed as female here by Laila Haley – finding a golden ticket and joining four lucky, and bratty, children on a tour of Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

Sarah Lounsberry in Peter PanQuad City Music Guild’s Thursday-night preview performance of Peter Pan – which, it should be stressed, was still technically a rehearsal – clocked in at roughly an hour and 55 minutes, making director Beth Marsoun’s presentation at least a half-hour shorter than any of the four other Peter Pans I’ve thus far seen on stage. This proved, at alternating times, to be both a very good thing and a rather unfortunate thing. But let’s start with the good.

Bryan Tank in CabaretQuad City Music Guild’s Cabaret is at its most entertaining whenever Bryan Tank’s Emcee graces the stage – “graces” being a somewhat incorrect term, as it's the actor’s unflinching commitment to his character’s blatantly sexual nature that’s so engaging. With his impressive German accent and convincing characterization of unabashed debauchery, Tank punctuates the beguilement of his Emcee by way of sexual gestures that seemed to titillate Thursday’s preview-performance audience, at least judging by the large amounts of laughter mixed with amused shock. (This was most notable during the threesome pelvic thrusts and other dance steps in Cabaret's “Two Ladies” number, one of several deliciously bawdy pieces choreographed by Emma Williams.)

Grease ensemble membersI approached Thursday's preview performance of Quad City Music Guild's Grease with preconceived opinions, not the least of which was that Grease is one of the few stage musicals that greatly improved in its transition to film. Not one of the half-dozen or so stage productions of this 1950's-themed high school musical I'd seen convinced me that the show was much good in its theatrical form; at best, I hoped for some notable performances in a musical I still wouldn't like. I didn't expect that great performances from the entire cast would have me re-thinking my entire opinion of Grease. They did.
